I am currently a junior in high school, and for the first time in my academic career, I got marked for academic dishonesty. I forgot to print an important paper, and I lied my way out of class to print my paper in the school library. I am currently going to a new school, and had I done this at my old school, I likely wouldn’t have gotten a referral. I talked with my principal, and she said it would appear on my record forever. Will this one time incident destroy my chances to, say, UC Irvine?
I don’t know if it will “destroy” your chances at Irvine, but you will destroy your chances of completing a degree if this pattern keeps up.
. You seem to be proud of this!
Lying, is a big no, no on the apps, in college and basically, in LIFE. You won’t be deemed as trustworthy.
I agree with @“aunt bea” . Colleges hate lying. And most won’t accept you, or will rescind your application if they find out later.
On a personal level, I am curious how that’s academic dishonesty if you didn’t plagiarize?
@“aunt bea” @caligirlj1 So basically, I was working a paper the night before until midnight. However, I accidently printed out the wrong paper. As a result, I told my teacher I needed to go to the bathroom instead of going to the library. However, I got caught. I know I exhibited bad judgement, but this was only a one-time incident, and it will not repeat in the future. This does not reflect my true character. Like I said, this was the first time I had ever done this, and it will be the only time I will ever do it.
I don’t mean to minimize what happened, but seeing as you didn’t plagiarize, as long as you explain this if it appears on your academic record, colleges won’t really care that you lied about printing out your paper.
Don’t worry–you’re definitely in a better situation than if you plagiarized or cheated! That’s really when colleges get pissed.
Did you also receive a zero for that assignment? If so, I don’t understand how the academic dishonesty referral is fair at all. Academic dishonesty is supposed to be for cheating/plagiarizing. The only thing that you should have gotten was a zero for not turning in the assignment, and maybe detention for lying to the teacher.
Is there a chance you or your parents can try to have a discussion with the school to see if they will dismiss the referral?
@philbegas No, I got credit for the assignment, because I was able to print it out and turn it in. However, my parents will have a conference with my principal.
I’m happy to hear there’s going to be an attempt at resolution. I don’t think that this counts as academic dishonesty. The proper procedure would have been to give you 0 credit, and detention if their rules were anything like my high school. I don’t know if you’re going to the meeting, but if I were your parents/you, I’d suggest offering to do a few days of detention instead if that doesn’t show up on the transcript/record.
I’ve heard that U.C’s don’t ask about your disciplinary history. I wouldn’t worry if i were you. Just don’t do it again
