I got caught plagiarizing, how will this affect my chances?

I am a sophmore and I got caught plagiarizing on my english paper. Not only did I get a zero on my paper, I also got a 1 day in school suspension. I feel sick to my stomach about what i've done and I will never repeat this mistake. I have never done this before, it was stupid, sick, immature and not worth it. Besides feeling like crying and puking at the same time, I'm terrified. Will the ISS affect me getting into a good college by showing up on my transcript? If it does, how much will it hurt me? Am i pretty much done for, and the only chance i have is a sucky community college?

depends on what your transcript shows. If it shows a suspension, then you’ll have to address that in an essay.

Out of curiosity, how did you get caught?

Come on, you really think that will make a difference? If anything, you can turn it to your advantage by writing about it in an essay (in two years). Really it shouldn’t be much of a factor. I have like 4 detention referrals and a day in ISS, and I got into a good school. Just focus on the other aspects of the app. Everyone screws up somewhere.

Ah i really hope so. I don’t know i’m just thinking that no good college is going to want some girl who plagiarized. And i got caught because my English teacher knew the book that I took the lines from. I know, i’m super smart right.

Don’t sweat it. you’ve got time.

Academic dishonesty is not a small thing. Anyone make light of it does not know the facts. You will need to talk to your counselor and see what you can do to minimize the damage.

This can seriously impact your chances of getting into college, particularly at those schools with academic honor codes.

Your best bet is to accept full responsibility and discuss the infraction in the Additional Information section of the Common App. Convey your disappointment in yourself; don’t make excuses.

not only but also

get your idioms right

You’ll have to find out how this was recorded on your school record.

Many schools treat ISS as “big detention” and don’t record it on school records.

At some point, have your parents ask to look at your school record (not right now, but later).

While no college likes this kind of stuff, many schools will still accept you. Your only choices will not be community colleges.

If at some point you have to explain it, speak honestly, own it, and say how you learned from it.
