I’m really disappointed in myself. To make it simple, I just finished my sophomore year. First semester, I ended up with straight A’s and was really happy. However in second semester, things really took a turn. My family got evicted from our house and I missed almost a month of school because of the stomach flu, fainting issues, fever etc. (it wasn’t very fun, let me tell you that). Throughout this time, my grades steadily dropped going from A to B to C (currently all my classes were all APs and honors but :(( ). I tried to bring it up, but It was pretty hard and i still ended up with C’s in AP Euro and Honors Algebra 2 Trig because mostly due to missing assignments. I’m pretty sure that after this semester, I will end up with around a 4.17 GPA (However, I do plan to take many MANY more classes to bring my GPA up). My only concern is, how are colleges going to feel about this horrific semester? Will having the given circumstances (eviction, missing school) do anything? Thank you!
According to my knowledge (someone correct me if I’m wrong) if you have a solid reason to back up your sudden drop in grades and are able to explain it when you are applying to colleges, it won’t hurt your chances of getting in. However, that’s only possible IF you keep your grades consistently on par with the grades you were getting before your circumstances (e.g. straight A’s) and I would even go so far as to say that you try to bring them up a bit so that the colleges you will apply to will also see an improvement in your grades and be able to consider your circumstances more fairly. I wish you the best of luck in your future high school career and sincerely hope this situation never befalls you again. Have a nice day!
- Is your Guidance Counselor aware of the situation? If not, let them know. If they knew this semester they may have helped you get some accomodations (e.g., for late work etc). If not, let them know so they can include that when they write your college recommendation.
- If this is a isolated incident because of a family issue, I don’t think colleges will dwell on it much. They want to know if you can do college level work. If you do well after this in your classes, they will know you can.
Hi, so sorry for the late reply! Thank you so much for responding! That really helped. In response to your question
- Yes, throughout this whole time, my counselor and I have been talking and going over the different changes that were going on. She was a big part of the reason I think I even made it through that semester. I’m just really glad everything is over now and it’s a new semester
