I had a 2390 SAT and I was waitlisted

I'm also first in my class...and thought I had a shot at HYP

wow this was a bit shocking, to be honest. I considered UVA one of my "safeties"

now im paraniod there's some serious flaw in my application

I wouldn’t ever consider UVA a safety unless I was in state.

I don’t think there was a flaw. Just… it’s not easy to get into UVA if you’re OOS.

relax the big issue is you are OOS and there are many with those numbers and more applying. You will find a good place and thrive there I am sure.

23% doesn’t seem that hard…

I’m looking at schools with <10% acceptance rate. how do I have a shot at those now??

I am surprised that you were not accepted, but do not worry: your stats are still excellent. If there were some major flaw in your application that you aren’t aware of, you would have been rejected.

^thanks for trying to comfort me, but I still feel awful :(

is there any way I can call and find out why they made the decision?

Stupefy, check your PMs–hopefully my story will provide you with a little bit of reassurance (if you didn’t get a PM, just let me know).

With all due respect, they probably throughout your application noticed arrogance that is extremely evident in this posting. Admissions is not just test scores, especially at UVA.

@funkyhamster, I did thank you!

@golfer- I’m sorry if my post conveyed arrogance. it’s not just my test scores, I have a perfect transcript, am first in my class of 400, have tons of extracurriculars and national awards. I dont think my app showed any arrogance (my essays had nothing to do with academic accomplishments). I guess im just distraught

:( Stupefy… maybe they thought you were so good you wouldn’t come. Just hang on till April 1st!

and @golfer28: I try never to say anything less than fair on this forum, but I have to say that calling someone arrogant is anything but “all due respect”. I’m sorry, but it would be better not to be so harsh on someone who’s just received an unfavorable decision. My friend just got rejected. Granted, it’s not the same as a Waitlist but it’s not the best feeling in the world. I’m not trying to preach or anything, I just think you’re coming to a judgment too fast on a person whose character I’ve seen through the past few months on CC and is far from arrogant. I’m really sorry for saying this, but Stupefy doesn’t deserve such an assessment.

After all, this is CC.

@Stupefy- Yes, I believe you can call to ask about the reason for your decision. Just remember that there are probably a lot of people doing that at the moment, so it may be busy. Also, I remember Dean J saying that it is a lot more “impressive” (not quite the right word I’m looking for…) when a student calls personally than when a parent or counselor calls for them. just fyi. I hope it all works out for you.

Don’t listen to golfer. My son was waitlisted too. I am shocked. He is also top 1% in class, lots of EC’s including captain of his soccer team (4 year Varsity), many hours of volunteer service. The school can never say enough about him. He all ready has an internship at a Major bank and works there 20 hours per week (students only go 1/2 days as seniors). He was accepted EA at BC and Villanova. He was waitlisted at Chicago. So in the beginning he was 4/4 (two other safeties) and now two waitlists. It is just so disappointing. I feel your heartbreak because mine is breaking for my son. I know you guys work so hard for 4 years and now this. I guess we just have to think that it was meant to be and the school that you were meant to go to has all ready accepted you or will. Keep your chin up, you seem like a great kid. Good luck
Mom of waitlisted student

@hb730- UVa doesn’t play the “so good they won’t come” game. It is such a good school that obviously we attract the best applicants. I believe Dean J has mentioned this before somewhere…can’t remember where at the moment, it was over a year ago.

I think a 2390 SAT and first in her class has good reason to be surprised she was waitlisted when one considers how much lower in-state stats are. UVA’s loss imo

<<<with all=“” due=“” respect,=“” they=“” probably=“” throughout=“” your=“” application=“” noticed=“” arrogance=“” that=“” is=“” extremely=“” evident=“” in=“” this=“” posting.=“” admissions=“” not=“” just=“” test=“” scores,=“” especially=“” at=“” uva.=“”>>></with>

With all due respect, Stupefy, glad you clarified that you were not being arrogant because it sounded as if you were. Virginia is no one’s safety. More to the point, I know kids who got into Ivy League schools who did not get into UCLA/UC Berkeley. These public schools are top-notch and coveted. They are no one’s safeties. People have got to re-calibrate.

Lol I read this post and laughed. First of all, I am sorry you got waitlisted. You should probably focus on writing a letter and updating your profile to appeal your decision if you are serious about coming here. Second, UVA is never a safety for anyone in spite of owning near-perfect SAT scores. Perhaps it should be reminded that UVA is a top-notch institution that attracts the best students from all over the world. If it’s of any comfort, my friend who owns a 2390 SAT got into Columbia but was rejected at UVA.

Well, I’m wrong, then, U.Va_hopeful, and that’s all right. Thanks for setting the issue straight, misinformation is a bad thing. But the fact that they waitlisted Stupefy still shows they thought she had a strong application. And this sort of thing is tough on every applicant.

Buffalo are you in VA or OOS?

@bigman- thanks :)

Thank you, that means a lot to me. I’m upset but I will just have to wait until April 1 to see if it was meant to be

I like your diction: “owns a 2390.” :slight_smile: (I can tell myself that I own a 2400 now.)
