I Hate Affirmative Action!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"asians (chinese) and blacks started off in america basically the same; severely underpaid, discriminated, etc."

also most whites too. everyone assumes that all whites can trace their heritage back to the mayflower, which isn't true. my ancestors were Irish and faced much discrimination when they arrived.

Honestly, are you all kidding? Asians and blacks in no way started off the same!!! Blacks were snatched off shores, shoved into boats and made to work like animals their entire lives. Their fingers were chopped off for learning to read! We weren't 'underpaid' we weren't paid at all!! We weren't discriminated, we weren't even considered HUMAN BEINGS.

No one forced asians to come to this country. No one prevented them from learning. And yes, you may have gotten crap pay, but you got PAID.

And yes white on white discrimination did occur, but AA is to help discrimination perpetrated by AMERICA on other groups. We're not out to help out races discriminated against by Britain or Germany, we're not that magnanimous.

All of your ancestors made the decision to come to America. They bought the ticket and took their chances. Being barred citizenship and given bad pay does not compare to over 300 years of dehumanization and prevention from learning. America not falling over itself to make life easy for you is not the same as refusing to acknowledge the humanity of the people who BUILT this country from the bottom up. Honestly, do you think America would have been so hot for your ancestors to move to if the forefathers had had to PAY all those workers? Of course not, the advent of slavery was when the colonies began to be successful, before that whites were bumming off the kindness of Native Americans and still trying to figure out rice.

Can you people say OWNED

I do not get it. You mean if Oprah Winfrey had kids her kids would get preferential treatment with affirmative action because they are black? I hardly think any kids she has would be disadvantaged.

If Oprah Winfrey had kids, her kids would get preferential treatment because their parent is a billionaire celebrity. Most students who get such preferential treatment are white. Where's the outcry about this form of preference that's based on birth, not any of the students' personal achievements?

Red_dragone, so why are hispanics included in AA?

that and...what affect should that have on college admissions? the injustice was done to your ancestors...not you. AA is just a poor trade off for under-resourced minority filled high schools. they should be providing AA students with a equal educational opportunity in high school....so the college admissions game will reward students on the content of their minds.

Oprhah Winfrey's kids would get both preferential treatment because they are black AND because their mother is a celeb and a billionaire. They would be counted in the school's quota numbers asa black minority student, the same as many disadvantaged blacks would. I do not think this is fair. That is why financial status should also be a consideration not only race. My son who is white middle class has to score higher on his LSAT then the imaginery children of Oprah who would no doubt have much more of an advantageous life style then him. And what about the very poor disadvantaged white student on the LSAT law school admit, again Oprah's kid would get peferential treatment and have to score lower on the LSAT then a poor white kid from Appalchia. Where is the fairness in that? AA is a bias against white middle class males. And BTW I am a very liberal democrat from the NE.
