This is my first job, and today I got my first paycheck. I open the envelope and see that I made $1,300. Then a list of taxes come and that number drops to 965.96, that's $334 gone. I'm 17 could they at least put less taxes, I'm happy to have a job to begin with. But, most of those taxes are for ridicules things.

Me. Too. Wanna start an anonymous anarchist collective?

Welcome to the working world.

Bleh lol. I just got used to skipping the first line and looking straight for my tax-deducted income. I know if I look at my actual salary and see how much I lost to tax, I’d be a very disgruntled employee by now.

Though I’m not really complaining.

You should get a good chunk back when you file your tax return. For federal taxes you get a $5700 (2009 figures) standard deduction for the year so if you learn less than that you will not have a federal tax liability. Do a tax return in the new year to get the deducted taxes refunded to you.

State taxes will depend on your state but you will have to file a State return to get a refund.

Medicare and SS taxes you are stuck with.

Eh, I was disappointed when I got my first check too, but then I remembered that it matters more that we have city services.

nah, it’s like a 1000 back if you’re lucky on tax returns, you’re parents would get more by just continuing to claim you than you would if you claimed yourself

but you know it’s really sweet when you’re super old and chilling

If your parents aren’t claiming you, then ask your employer to stop taking out federal/state income tax from your paycheck (by filling out a w-4). You’re exempt for the first $5700. There’s no reason to be handing out interest free loans to the government unless that’s your thing.

Even if your parents claim you, you still get $5700 standard deduction. You to not get to claim the additional personal exemption of $3650 if they can claim you as a dependent. But you do still get the $5700 standard deduction. (2009 figures).

Taxes hate you too. :(

But yeah, taxes, esp property taxes, suck a lot. I know a few places with property taxes of more than $10,000.

Damn, what’s your job? lol

I hate roads! And free education! And police protection! And natural landmarks!

^ I actually do hate natural landmarks…

@futurexecutive I’m an intern at this major company. But its only for the summer.

Ty for the correction.

@Mosby - They’re not free. You pay for them with taxes.

@boston: My point exactly. No taxes, no nifty free stuff.

Clearly, we should abolish public schooling as the OP has yet to learn how to spell “ridiculous” despite 11-12 years of tax-funded education.

^It was a typo, and second I never went to a public school anyway.

@Mosby - How is that a point? No taxes, and you only spend money on things you want. It would be completely voluntary as well, and thus moral. Taxes are initiatory coercion, and thus immoral.
