I hate to ask....but I also hate waiting....so chances?

Hi,

I would really appreciate if you could chance me on my chances for Duke. It's my third choice, and i realllly like it a lot....would love it if i got accepted there! :)

STATS, ETC.

Ethnicity: Asian--Indian!
Gender: Female

School - Huge; 3000 kids

GPA-- 3.945 (W) and 3.923 (UW) (we dont go above a 4.0)
Class rank: we dont rank; top 5% according to counselor
Course load: Most Rigorous possible, i think; took a college course at a really good college (sorry i wont say the name because i'm weirdly scared of stalkers :) ). Took 10 AP classes and self studied for 7 AP Exams

ACT: 32, writing:11 (retarded science section...)

SAT I:
Math - 740
Critical Reading - 680 (i cried when the score report came home)
Writing - 750; 12 on essay :)

SAT II:
Math II - 720
Biology M -660
Chemistry-660

AP Tests:
US History - 3
World History - canceled score because i self studied as a sophomore and thought i should cancel 3's. This is the same for Macroeconomics, Euro History, Environmental Science. I took 6 on my own sophomore year.
English Language - 5
Biology - 3
Chemistry - 3
Calculus BC-3; AB Subscore-4
Government -3

I know i royally failed the APs because of many things, sick, bad teachers, etc (only my english teacher was really good). BUT, mostly, it's cuz i suck at multiple choice, which is how i failed SAT crit. reading too. oh well, i reallllllllllly hope those darned AP scores won't kill my chances of admission :(

Taking AP Eng Lit, AP Stats, AP Latin Lit, AP Physics Mechanics C, college course---organic chemistry (SO HARD by the way), and a really selective anatomy/physiology program (had to apply and get to shadow a neurosurgeon, which is what i want to be, next semester)

Also self studying for AP Psychology this year, too.

Essays: Idk...I think my "Why Duke" essay was probably the best....I really lost it and went all out ME on that one. Sleep deprivation, what can i say....

Recommendations:
Counselor: AMAZING. she's told me that at least 5 times already. I hope that helps since she has like 4 or 500 students...(not just seniors)
Teacher 1: AP Chem Teacher-loved me, told me it was a good letter ( I didn't see any of these)
Teacher 2: English teacher--Pretty sure it's really good since he told me he'd be willing to write the rec before I even asked...

Interview:
Owned it. Definitely.

Extracurriculars:
-No school sports, though I do have been learning Indian classical dance intensely for the last 14 years; doing the honorable graduation next summer!!! :)
-Violin (nothing special there really :( )
-School Clubs: NHS, Interact, Science Olympiad (Co-captain 2 years), Forensics (only freshman year, then it died. I was VP and a state finalist in informative speaking), Model UN (soph year, Board of Advisors. then we had to stop b/c lack of funding), Biology Olympiad (founder and copresident of the opportunity at my school. The school made me start a club so it could administer the exam. 3 years), Indian Student Association, started a Red Cross Club at my school this year

Other Stuff/Community Service:
-Over 800 volunteer hours total (that was my "passion" thing)
-two hospitals--ER of one and children's cancer ward at the other
-Red Cross--board member and leader of the youth people (some 70+ people) (youth people = YCAT); over 200 hours in the last 2.5 years
-Youth Senate--Leader of the School Board committee where we give a report that I write to the Board at their biweekly meetings, Facilitator and Leader of the LeadTeam, Fight AIDS in Africa Project coordinator's assistant and wrote grants for them
-Cofounder and Codirector of ScienceDays in my city
-Started and am head coach of the middle school's Science Olympiad team; coach two individual events as well (Anatomy and Forensic Science...i love that event :) )
-Also create some events for Elementary Science Olympiad in my county.
-Reach out and Read (3 hrs/ week)
-Started two nonprofit organizations (one is about dance and raising money for rural organizations in India and the other is helping kids get interested in volunteering) and am the Executive Director for both
--Prostate Cancer Research (22 hrs/week; started after my grandfather died of prostate cancer) and also Pediatric OCD Research (6 hrs/ week; work as the Research Assistant there; I love the brain and want to be a pediatric neurosurgeon, and I got an opportunity in psych research so I took it :) )

Other stuff:
-National Merit Semifinalist
-AP Scholar
-Student Teacher for both Dance and "Indian school" (which I have been attending for over 10 years)
-awards for like all the different volunteering stuff up there

I'm really worried about the 2 B's I got in calculus (both semesters). They were actually supposed to be B+'s but they were 0.2% away and my teacher hated me sob

Sorry for writing so much. If you managed to read all that, what do you think my chances are?

Thanks! =)

I wouldn’t say your chances are good(<50%)
your academic rigor and Ecs are what will help.
also depending on the essays and interview, you still could get in.

test scores will hurt you though!

you have a good chance. ^ How will her test scores hurt? she has a 32 on the ACT and her SAT II scores are not that bad.

my test scores suck. end of story. i know that. i’m just hoping they’ll look past the APs and definitely praying that that cliche “i’m more than a test score” realllllllllllllly comes true for me :-/

yea your pretty much dumb…

your probably in, you don’t need to be chance haha, another CC overachiever

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/623727-chances-would-appreciated-chances-back.html

lol, i was like, “gee thanks” when i saw the first statement…
but thanks for the vote of confidence…one of my teacher’s from last year told me i shouldn’t be “like the rest of my culture and go into medicine” because she thought i “didnt have the strength for it” and that i “would burn out worse than a packet of her husband’s cigarettes” LOL, that was depressing, albeit humorous

The way you criticized yourself made me want to burst into tears. If your test scores suck, then mine are absolutely horrible and I did better than most people I know. Lancepants is completely wrong because Duke’s stats correspond to your test scores. You’re in their range and everything else looks amazing. I don’t see why you wouldn’t get accepted. I am worried about my acceptance as well, but I will not post my stats after seeing yours. I’m quite embarassed now…

I also don’t see why you would cry over a 680 in critical reading because that’s also in Duke’s range…

Also, AP test scores are usually considered extras and do not affect admission.

Aww, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to make you feel bad!
Well, let’s just say that being of the Indian descent, things are a little harder in my house…lol…hence the crying at what normal people would term “good” haha
but i took like 24 practice tests. i WANTED above 700 on each section >.< darned critical reading >.<

Yeah, me too. I made a 690 on the crit. reading! haha

I should have taken all the practice tests you took. I only took one and I didn’t take the PSAT

I wouldn’t say I am completely wrong as far as test scores go. I am glad Stanfordluver401 realizes this.

Duke is getting a lot more competitive!
17 % increase in applications.

and her test scores might be in the range but at the lower end
none of her scores are good except for english/writing!

sat II’s in the 600’s
3’s on APs
and 32 isn’t phenomenal

i’m just trying to give my honest opinion, not trying to be mean!

i’m not saying she won’t get in, i am just saying i think her scores will be at the best neutral and at the worst a negative on her application
