By the way, my parents are not working and I am the first child to go to college. What do you think lucky boy ?

Darkling: Some modesty is welcomed after (my) pompous statements.

KR_Mud: What's the point of taunting him? (At least it appear that way).

He's humble; something that needs to be exercised by more people, myself included.

EG: I in no way meant to portray you as pompous. I just saw MZ and then KR and thought, oh no here comes the tandem.

KR: You do not have one iota of credibility to your name. You're not going to generate any false sympathies from your lies and nagging with your concocted stories of Harvard acceptances (when acceptances aren't out yet) and Cornell "EA[sic]" (nonexistant). Good luck at whatever actual college you end up that realized that they can put up with characters like yourself- I'm just thankful its not here.

I know this won't make anyone feel better, and it may be like kicking a person when they are down..but, since I am an older student I can tell you this: welcome to the real world.

The real world isn't fair. Not everyone gets a trophy and all the rules are made to be bent. You will be refused certain opportunities to satisfy a politically "correct" social agenda. You will be the victim of reverse-racism.

My advice: Don't cry foul, because it won't matter. You just have to try that much harder to get where you want to go. If you are white and middle class, especially males, you are especially screwed and must work harder because no one will be there to help you. In the case of UCLA, even being Asian could be detrimental to a degree not acknowledged by an administration.

This might be the first taste of such foul play by some of you, but it is by no means the last. Learn what you can, remember the sting of unfair rejection and try to make a change in the future. You can't just say "that's not fair!", you have to prove why it isn't and make people listen. This may be considered tilting at windmills, but it shows fire and heart...things many admitted students are sorely lacking.

In closing, I will not say good luck, because for the most part we make our own luck through hard work and determination...so I will simply advise: Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and always be ready to do your best.

"even being Asian could be detrimental to a degree not acknowledged by an administration."

some say to a greater degree than white middle class male

In a school like UCLA, that is very possible.

Mz, students like your friend have had the dvantage for several generations, at least, so don't feel like this...everyone deserves a chance to prove themselves. I've said this in other threads---my parents' SAT's were in the 500's and mine are in the high 700's...I had advantages they worked for. Your 1350 promises your kids' will be 1550's...we all benefit in this country from mixin' it up, letting fresh blood swing the bat. And this is coming from a northeast WASP, as well as from the Supreme Court. Be grateful our society believes in the magic of opportunity! A white kid---myself included---has every reason to have stellar stats. Take your swing and be grateful.

Kudos to darkling for being able to see outside his microcosm.

KR_mud: I don't think we're on opposite sides of the discussion here. I'm not advocating admission BASED on race, but I just think that background (which includes race) is a legit FACTOR in admissions.

I actually debated this issue a month or so ago w/ an URM in my class. And he was arguing against affirmative action. It was very surreal...haha.

Oh, and you mean lucky...girl? :-)

UCLA booo

their admissions r rigged big time

I am Hispanic and I got into UCLA with a 4.55 GPA and SAT score of 2050… So please don’t be grouping all Hispanics into this group of yours, in which you think that most of the Hispanics at UCLA are like you. Just speak for yourself and show that you’re worth being admitted there.

This has to be some kind of record for necroposting.

Strong, strong 6 year bump gabriel.

20 bucks says you are getting some huge ass portion of financial aid… oh and don’t be mad that a fellow hispanic recognizes a stereotype.

I’m part eskimo and part blackanesean, and I got in with a 2.7/1220. Beat that, homez!

Don’t worry about it Gabriel, grapesoda…

Interesting word, “necroposting”… I’ll have to save that reference.

There might have been more of an element of truth back in 2005, in which UCLA accepted lower uw grades as compared to now:

2005

3.30-3.69 - 17.11% Acceptance Rate, 33.19% of Total Students Enrolled
3.00-3.29 - 3.87%, 4.55%
Below 3.00 - 1.97%, 1.53%

Average UW GPA, 3.72

2010

3.30-3.69 - 6.64%, 16.46%
3.00-3.29 - 2.10%, 3.13%
Below 3.00 - 1.42%, 1.29%

Average UW GPA, 3.81

So, no, the typical Hispanic applicant that makes it to UCLA doesn’t have anywhere near as low as a ~ 3.1 gpa.

There’s a lot of grave digging in other subforums on here. There’s also an option at the bottom that allows you to see the list of threads in reverse chronological order.

This thread makes no sense. UCLA (or any other UC) doesn’t even do affirmative action. Anyone that thinks otherwise should look at the high percentage of Asians and very low percentage of African-Americans (most of whom are athletes too)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_209_(1996)

some conspiracy theorists say UCLA does this anyway; right, because prestigious universities go out of their way to break the law

People will usually favor whatever political policies favor them: the white student who wants this supposed ‘affirmative action’ to disappear, is no different, in this regard, than the supposed hispanic, or other URM student, who wants it to flourish.

Also, admissions are a crapshoot. A friend of mine got admitted with slightly lower stats than me for the same major at berkeley for which i was rejected (although i’m pretty sure i was borderline.) I wouldn’t doubt that even the administrators themselves knew why they picked one over the other. For all we know, they just flip a coin.

But why is the OP upset? He got in. Lol? Is your white friend a sexual domestic partner of yours or something?
