I have a friend thats smart but needs aid

my friends sat: 800math/630reading/600writing
an 800 sat mathII 770physics
also, he has a 4.6 weighted gpa.
hes entering 12th grade.

He wants to go to either uf, nyu or berkeley. Are there any scholarships he can be awarded for his high sat scores? He needs financial aid.

What is his home state? What is his unweighted GPA? UF and Berkeley are state schools and most aid is awarded in state. NYU is fairly notorious for skimping on aid. His math SAT 1 is great but the other two are just good which may not bring much aid. If he really needs aid he should look at schools which offer merit aid and in which he is at the 75% of applicants.

You asked about merit and said he needs financial aid. Those are a bit different. The first thing he should do is run a financial aid calculator to see what his EFC is. If he is low-income, his best strategy may be to target good schools with generous need-based aid. If he is not low-income, he will need to target merit aid (scholarships).

He can get merit but only if he targets the right schools. The 3 you listed probably aren’t very good schools for school-based scholarships (unless FL or UCB are instate for him). Most outside scholarships will not cover a ton of costs and most are just for first year so he really needs to focus on school-based money.

Anyway, there are threads here for people who targeted merit and did very well. Does he need a LOT of merit (like almost everything paid for) or a scholarship (like $10k)? If he needs a lot of merit, he will need to target schools where his grades are at the very tip-top. That might mean targeting schools that are ranked 200 instead of top-20. If he just needs a smaller scholarship, he might target a few schools that are known to give out a lot of scholarships (some people call that “tuition discounting”).

he lives in florida. his unweighted gpa is like 3.6. he will need like 35k

any specific recommendations?

Doesn’t Florida have a great merit program for in-state kids? But yes, there your friend needs to find schools were he is in the tippy top. There are many threads regarding NYU…my take is it is not a great school for aid. California is difficult for out of state kids and with their current budget crisis probably also a long shot for the kind of money your friend needs, but tell your friend to do the research.

Probably needs to retake SAT, 630 is a little low on CR. 600 is low on writing, but its not as important as getting CR up (concerning Merit Scholarships)

You need to run the calculators to find out if how much financial aid he’s eligible for. Then he can know what kind of school to target.

If he needs most of his tution paid for with merit $, he will probably be best off using the Fl state scholarship plan. Other than that, he would have to aim pretty low because his CR and Writing are too low for merit at top schools. If he qualifies for financial aid, he should probably aim for top techy schools-- Harvey Mudd, etc-- that would be interested in someone with his profile.

Highly unlikely to get $35K from NYU and impossible from Berkeley.
