I'm a really hard working student and I have a GPA of 3.9 and take pretty tough classes, but for some reason I just don't know how to do very well on the SAT. I got a 1730 and I'm very disappointed with myself. When I apply to colleges in the fall, and let's say my SAT score is still 1730, how bad should I worry? I have a good GPA and do a good deal of extra curricular stuff, so how much do you think my SAT score will hurt me? I don't want my chances to get into really good colleges to fall apart just because my fricking SAT score, because I know I'm a good hard working student. =/ I'm planning to study my ass of my this summer to ensure that I don't get anything less than a 1900 my 3rd time.

Better than average, so your good.

if you pull those SATs up, you should be good for a pretty decent state school. but don’t expect too much more, honestly…

3.9 weighted or unweighted? Because 1700 SAT and 3.9 weighted seem about the same to me.

There are a growing list of excellent schools that do not require SAT’s. I’d suggest focus on these schools in applying. SAT’s are just one, imperfect, measure of potential. Your work ethic – as evidence by your academic achievement, is a much more important driver of your success.

"3.9 weighted or unweighted? Because 1700 SAT and 3.9 weighted seem about the same to me. "

I only have a 3.5 weighted and I got an 1800. Some people do better on standardized tests. I have a bad gpa because I don’t do homework very much, but I’m a good test taker.

^ I know. My brother got 1530/1600 and had a 3.3 weighted GPA. That’s a large disparity. 3.9 weighted and 1700 SAT isn’t.

1700 isn’t bad…in fact I hope to get my sore up to that from low 1600. Dosn’t mean you won’t get in anywhere…it just means…uhh…ivy leagues are out of the question along with high end state schools n’ such.

Then what GPAs/SAT scores would I need to get into high end state schools/ivy leagues?

My friend got into Northeastern with a scholarship with an SAT score around the same level and a GPA around 3.5 or 3.6. He does attend a really really good public high school though (not a magnet). If I were you I would apply to U Mich- Ann Arbor.

A lot of times SATs and GPAs don’t correlate, which is why many people say that SATs are such a bad predictor of college performance and shouldn’t be used as admissions criteria (and to some extent I agree).

If you’re aiming for Ivies you would need to pull your score up to around 2000 AT LEAST to even be considered. Unless everything is absolutely phenomenal 1730 has a very little chance of getting in. Your GPA (assuming it’s unweighted) is fine. Personally I would not get your hopes up and aim a little lower - there are many excellent schools that would accept you.

Have you considered the ACT? Often kids who struggle with the SAT do better on that.

I don’t know why you are freaking out. A 1700+ with that GPA will get you into some very competitive schools.

Thank you very much you three. I should note that 1730 will most likely not be my final SAT score since I will take it again in the fall and with the amount of studying I plan on doing during my long summer (I did no studying for this take), I don’t see why I can’t get at least a 2000. I’m hoping I do well, because it’s the only thing stopping me from looking like a really good student. I’m not getting my hopes up for an Ivy League either way, though - in fact, USC (So Cal) is the school I want to get into the most. I made this thread to find out right now if somehow my SAT score is still around the 1700s by the fall, how much of a chance do I have to get into some high end colleges.

Don’t know how much it helps, I’m a US Citizen but I live in Sudan, not America. So I guess that would make me an international student to some degree, since I was only born and raised in California. I don’t live there right now.

3.9 GPA and 2000 SAT are each a little under the USC average.

Is it weighted or unweighted?

3.1 uw 2170 SATI lol
btw im a sophmore

My friend had a 3.9 unweighted GPA and got a 1200/2400 on the SAT. She and her family think she did well and I’m too embarrassed to admit to her it’s a pretty bad score.

You’re still good for your state flagship… if that’s 3.9 unweighted (and prolly still if its weighted, but depending)

Depends on the state. 1730 on the SAT makes UCLA/Berkeley unlikely, if they’re from California (and a lot of people are).

You take the ACT? ;)
