I have a low B in an IB class-- are my chances ruined?

I'm a senior who is interested in many colleges that have a 45-60 percent acceptance rate and I have above-average SAT scores, but this year senioritist and emotional problems have really taken a toll on me, and because of that my grades are slipping. However, it seems like every first semester of my high school career I get one B, so it's not out of ordinary (accumulative GPA is 3.95). My worry is that since my SAT scores are not so spectacular, so I feel like my grades are going to be heavily evaluated... Am I right to be worried?

Oh, the B is in IB History, and I'm interested in majoring in Philosophy.

No, one B is is certainly not an issue for colleges in that acceptance rate, or any college really. Just as important is pursuing a rigorous schedule. But you have a B every year so I don’t quite understand the gpa. You say your SAT scores are both ‘above average’ and ‘not so spectacular’ so I don’t know how to comment on that part. Both gpa and SAT are usually heavily evaluated. I don’t think you should be worried. You are in an IB program which carries a lot of weight. Instead you should select carefully have a safety or two and take care to put together an application that really represents you and take care with all the essay and short answer portions so you can feel you did your best.

Thank you for your reply. My SAT scores are in the low 1800s, which I was under the impression that it was above average but not that great.

Actually, going over my transcripts again the Bs came from my eighth grade year when I too two high-school level classes, and in this summer I took a class at my community college that accounted for 4.00 credits and I got an A. I got a B in Advance Freshmen English. So maybe it’s a bit of a stretch that I said that I got a B every year, but it still worries me.

You worry too much.

Haha yeah I do… It’s just stressful knowing that my friends who got almost perfect scores on the SATs applied to very selective schools and got rejected… if they got rejected, I easily can, too!
