I have a low SAT score...help?

Ok so i just got my PSAT scores back today an i got a 1430 out of 2400. So when I actually take my SAT's I'm looking at a 1500-1650 score. So will a poor SAT score keep me from getting into a decent college like VT or JMU?

Here are the rest of my credentials...
-NHS
-Music Honor Society
-Spanish Club
-Key Club
-200+ hours of community service
-Held a job for over a year
-I'm in all honor classes and have all A's and B's in them
-4.1 GPA
-Marching Band/Wind Essemble
-All County/District Band member

P.S this is my second time taking the PSAT's as a junior.

DONT WORRY! :)

It was just the PSAT. Yes, I am sure you will get the score you want on the actual SAT.

My advice, buy that college board book with 10 practice tests in it… pour through them… you will get the results you want, I can almost guarantee it.

Good luck to you

btw, great every other part of your application

I completely agree, PSATs barely tell you anything. Mine were much lower than my actual SAT scores. Plus there’s always the ACT.

Oh really? What was your psat score and you actual sat score? Also did you do any prepping? Thx!

To answer your original question, a low SAT score can affect your admissions. Your projected SAT is a little on the low side but rigor and GPA are the two most important factors in admissions at those schools. ECs are only considered. As an alternative, once you’ve taken an official shot at the SAT try the ACT. Some people do much better on that.

Well, I am assuming you are from Va, so I can actually help you.

All your stats are good. A band kid with some addtional little things, including pretty good grades. However, you seem very typical, so an SAT score of around 1700-1800 can lock your chances at those schools. I have seen plenty people get into JMU with high grades and okay SATs, so I think that is fine dude. As for VT, it is not harder than JMU, probably even easier to get into. Best of luck!

PSAT has VERY little bearing on actual SAT score in my opinion.

I took the PSAT after I took the SAT, but I didn’t have my PSAT scores back by that time.

Well, I get my SAT scores back and have a 2230
Then I get my PSAT scores back… 192 ***

THERE IS HOPE MY FRIEND

and yeah, i prepped just like i said above… 15 hours max (over several weeks of course :D)

Get a prep book with a thing to read (not just practice tests). That will help alot for math, because there are really only a couple formulas you need to know. I found the tips they gave for the critical reading to help alot too (mark the text and answer as you read)

Once you read that, do college board’s 10 tests. If you still need more, there are plenty of other companies offering books with 10+ tests.
