I have made a scientific breakthrough

Now what..?

Celebrate with a drink.

Write it down in pen.

...what's the breakthrough?

Publish a paper detailing your discovery in a peer-reviewed journal?

well you make a neat gun, for the people who are still alive

still alive...

Look on the internet

On page 5,297 of your Google search, realize that in an obscure corner of the Finnish countryside, an adjunct professor in a small college you will never hear of made that breakthrough two years ago.

Stuff face with jelly beans.

Prepare to be sued for the rights to it.

okay. I feel a little bad about my previous post. I was just joking.

If you actually made such a breakthrough, and I'm assuming you're pretty young and not fully engaged in some sort of institution that supports such breakthroughs (lest you wouldn't be posting), then

print out a non-disclosure agreement form,

seek a meeting at a nearby university with someone in that field that you feel you could trust,

be humble in simply seeking advice on where to go but also ask the person to sign it just for protection so they can't steal it. It might be hard to enforce if they were really eager to run away with your idea, but it's something should you have the opportunity to face them in a court of law.

Publish a paper detailing your discovery in a peer-reviewed journal?

Will I be protected from my ideas being stolen? I know Einstein did something similar...

watch as your mentors receive the credit.

if you are serious, OP, then i think you should contact a nearby (or not) university...they can walk you through the steps of getting credit and a paper published

you can also talk to you science teacher, if only to confirm you have made an actual breakthrough

Depends on what you mean by "stolen".

Someone else publishing your discovery and claiming it was their own? No, you can't stop someone from committing fraud. But, if you are the first to publish, it would be a lot easier to prove it was your idea first.

Someone else using your discovery for additional research? No, you will not be protected.

Someone else profiting from your discovery? Patents can protect you from others financially benefiting from your breakthrough.
