Gaah, I'm nervous about this. I'll be meeting the guy at his office (whoo, law firm) going directly from school, and going to work afterwards.

For work I usually wear cords and a tshirt or jeans and a collared shirt. I feel like I should dress it up a bit for the interview, but I don't know how much.

Any advice? (the interview is for Washington University in St. Louis, but I'mma have a Harvard interview at some point, too, so I guess this applies for that too)

Each school is different. One school I interviewed at told me to dress like I normally do. But it was a very laid back interview...the interviewer even said "sucks" multiple times.

For Harvard, I'd say very formal. For Washington, your work clothes may be fine.

Cords are fine if you're meeting at a coffeeshop, but if you're meeting at a law firm, dress up. I'm guessing you're a girl...Wear a skirt, the weather right now isn't prohibitive.

I would suggest dressing nicely for the interview in the law office. You don't want to go into such a nice setting without dressing properly. Just wear something professional-looking. If you are like my D, you don't have a suit. If that's the case, do you have a blazer or jacket? You could wear that with nice pants or a skirt & maybe a button-front shirt. DON'T wear a short skirt, tight pants, jeans, a low-cut shirt --- present yourself neatly & professionally, but it's okay to be a teen.

Oops, I was assuming you are a girl (sorry if you are not!). For guys, make sure the shirt has a collar. Don't wear a polo to the law office; wear a button-front (and for heaven's sake, tuck it in!). Wear khakis or something similar, but not cargo-style.

If you have an interview in a coffee shop, you can be more casual. I would still suggest being "polished" --- first impressions are important. That it, girl DON'Ts apply & for a guy, you need a collar. For either sex, jeans are okay in that situation, but no rips or tears, please. My daughter had an interview in a coffee shop, and the girl who followed her had a low-cut shirt. It just was NOT a good choice! Be tasteful.

My daughter had 2 interviews outside admissions offices. One was with an admissions rep in a coffee shop, and the other was with an alumnus (a lawyer, by the way) in a different coffee shop! Both interviews were great. The interviewers were wonderful, and my D felt very comfortable.

Don't let the location make you uncomfortable. WashU is a laid-back kind of school, and I would bet the interviewer makes you feel at ease. My D's alum interview was for Tufts, and the guy was great! Her friend had a phone interview with a woman from an ivy, and it was really stiff & uncomfortable. I think face-to-face, no matter where it takes place, is good.

My Harvard interview was at a starbucks , I was casual but did not wear jeans or sweat pants and it went very well !!! If its in the office I probably be formal.
