I am currently a junior in high school and have been starting to look at what college I want to go to. My ideal school would be an urban college, not to big but not to small, not as expensive as NYU (or is at least known for being generous with financial aid), in the northern states (I like the cold), and a genuinely good university (although I don’t think i could get into an ivy). My dream college is NYU but i don’t know if my parents could afford it. I do come from a home with each parent making <200k, but they will not pay for NYU unless i get a good financial aid packet.
My unweighted gpa: 3.96 (rn but could go to 3.87ish at the end of the semester
Weighted gpa: 4.17
Took the SAT once (no preparation, i just wanted to see my base score): 1880
Plan on getting it up to 2100’s
May take Act: plan on getting low 30’s
Ec’s:
Freshman yr: Referee, orchestra, football
Sophmore yr: Worked as a waiter, football, orchestra
Jr yr: water polo, waiter, and work at old navy
If your parents together are pulling in close to 400K then you won’t be eligible for need based aid. Do you have a dozen offspring that your parents are anticipating having to put through college? You should probably visit some schools close to you that you would not necessarily be interested in attending but to get some sense about what you like in a college. You could also look at free resources on the internet.
Yep, the only kind of aid you’re going to get is merit aid, and the way you get that is by looking at schools where not everybody and his brother is knocking down the doors to get in (super selective schools rarely offer merit), and where your stats put you somewhere close to the top 25% of their range. I don’t know whether NYU offers any merit money or not – you should check – but I wouldn’t count on it.
Would you consider hopping the Canadian border? Tuition at McGill in Montreal will be substantially less than NYU (moreso for some majors than others), it has more of a campus than NYU, it’s very highly ranked internationally, and is plenty cold.
University of Minnesota in Minneapolis is one that comes to mind. However, it is a big public school. But it is in the north, urban city and does offer scholarships for OOS
$400,000 is much too high for financial aid. NYU is expensive, and with no FA it’s definitely not a good idea.
