I wanted to major in engineering at U of I or Michigan or Berkeley or Purdue.
Just by looking at my grades, do you think I can get into any of those schools?
I know EC, essays, and interview matter as well but I feel like i will end up in community college.
Please help. What do I do now.
There are a ton of schools between Michigan and CC! And your grades are solid – nothing below a B is quite good. Purdue still seems likely. But are your parents ready to shell out $200K for your education? Those are all state schools, and charge more for OOS students. What state do you live in? What is your financial situation?
Don’t get too hung up on a few schools. Figure out your cost parameters, and get your standardized testing done. Then develop a list of safety, match, and reach schools that work for you.
I assume it is just hyperbole about killing yourself. If not, get help right away. See your HS counselor, talk to your parents, or a trusted adult teacher or relative. You are actually a strong student who should have no trouble getting into some good four year colleges. Don’t let prestige or “name brands” define your self worth. Be smart about your search – you can get a great education at plenty of schools.
You really should not be trying to get into the most academically difficult schools that you could possibly get into. You should be trying to get into schools that are a good fit for you and that you can afford.
What state are you from?
For a potential engineering student I am not concerned at all about a B in US History or Euro history. However, can you explain why you are getting B’s in your junior year math and physics classes? Is it possible that you can pull these up to A’s by the end of this year? I would suggest that it is worth putting in a lot of effort between now and the end of the year to try to do so.
I know so many kids that have gotten into both Purdue and Michigan with transcripts like yours. Those are AP classes, too. The situation isn’t nearly as dire as you think…there are so many spectacular students on this website (or their parents). The real world looks very different.
Hopefully that “I want to kill myself” line is hyperbole. If not please go see a therapist or counselor tomorrow first thing.
You’re doing very well. No university expect straight A’s. Seriously, even Harvard is OK with a couple B’s. You’re good.
The main issue isn’t a couple of Bs. The main issue is
your budget (unless your parents are wealthy, most of these will be unaffordable since you’re looking at public universities and cannot be instate for all)
you’re fixated on just a handful of schools. Your goal should be to identify two affordable colleges with a 50%+ admission rate that you wouldn’t mind going to. Everybody can have dream schools - the real work is finding your affordable safeties that are also a good fit.
First, your grades are not bad or life ending. I think the problem is that you are overloaded on AP’s. You have 3 math based AP’s plus an engineering class. Then two other AP’s that are not really that important to engineering. It’s a lot for anyone to handle especially since the 3 math based ones are considered to be more difficult AP’s. I don’t know if it’s possible, but could you drop down APush to regular History to free up some time to focus on your other classes?
