Because I have no more time for the math SAT II, I am withdrawing my application from Carnegie Mellon. I'm going to use that last fee waiver on the University of Arizona, instead -- it's warmer.

How would my having a girlfriend fly at any of these schools?

At vassar, bard, and eugene lang.... they would be shocked if you had anything other than a girlfriend. ;-)

^^ Good point, haha! I didn't apply to Eugene Lang after all, but ya. It would be nice to be open about it without feeling that people are being judgmental. : P

I did my interview with DePauw, I think it went well. I'm so glad to have an opportunity to explain my abysmal grades from 9th grade.

^ always a plus.

^ Isn't it, though? I was excited that I actually got to have my say and tell them that hey, my grades might not reflect my intellect, but I'm a really hard worker. And because I have a stellar vocabulary, my interviewer seemed to believe it. So I'm glad.

Also! Got in at Penn State UP! Quite thrilled, it's my #2 choice (after a tie between Vassar, Bard, and DePauw...ugh).

Penn State is a wonderful school with many terrific programs. The school is not known for giving lots of financial aid to out-of-state kids, though. In a case like yours, with fairly low family income, you might get a better deal from a private.

Yeah. I was thinking that too. Moreover, I was accepted to the summer session -- which means being on campus two days after I graduate. It's going to be a hard decision, because I have loved Penn State since I was four (and that was only rekindled by a visit in mid-July), but on the other hand...is it worth potentially being $30k+ in debt and losing my last summer?

It is a great school, and the spirit there is tremendous. You need to wait until April and see what options you have. I hope you will get enough money to attend. However, out of state publics typically offer the least amount of aid, because the schools' mandate is to educate in-state students. Is it worth giving up your summer? If Penn State is the school for you, I think it would be! I think money will be more of a problem than giving up a summer.

It's definitely an awesome school; not only is it ranked in the top 50 nationally, but when I visited last summer, the spirit was infectious. I'd never experienced that anywhere before (on the other hand, I've only visited three schools, two of which I ultimately decided to take off of my list). It would be a great education and atmosphere and a good excuse to get out of my town early, but my friends would be upset and so would my parents. We'll see, I guess. I was planning on waiting until April, anyway. I've sort of got a flow chart in my head of how it'll turn out now that I've been accepted into my #2.

Also, I received an acceptance letter today from VCU -- to whom I sent an email in December asking to withdraw my application because I sent out too many fee waivers (at request of the guidance office, to whom I sent a CC of said email). That's...not good.

Accepted to DePauw! Awesome!

Congratulations!

You were mostly right on those, mcvcm92. =)

I feel like I didn't challenge myself at all. I can't go to Vassar because I was ill with mono both times I signed up for the SAT II's. That was my dream school. Now the schools I've gotten into weren't hard, and I am kind of upset. Maybe I should try for a second-semester transfer at Vassar if I don't end up liking where I go (at the moment, looks like DePauw).

If you took the ACT w/writing, you can send that to Vassar instead of the SAT plus SAT IIs.

Didn't take it. I took the SAT's late because there wasn't any time because of financial issues (before I knew about fee waivers), which messed up my entire schedule. Blargh.

Here have been my ultimate results:

Look, if it makes you feel better (or worse, :D), Vassar would have been a really really really high reach for you. My daughter, who had a 2220 SAT and was a National Merit Finalist, with a 92 average from a high-profile magnet school, was denied. I think you got great results, and you have a number of wonderful, affordable options. So you're far ahead of the game!

Ehh, still, if I hadn't been such a slacker in 9th grade, I could easily have been around a 92-93 average by now, at least. I graduated ranked #3 in middle school. I know that I shouldn't, but I can't help kicking myself about coulda-woulda-shouldas and thinking that I screwed myself over with one bad year.

But maybe that's just me being an elitist. I am, of course, thrilled with my results, because I haven't gotten a single rejection or waitlist, and I'm looking forward to either attending DePauw or Penn State in the summer. (Having extreme difficulty making a decision between those two...)
