I have to say, I feel royally screwed.

I don't want to have to end up going to community college for a year. If that were to happen, I don't know what I would do; it's nothing against community college, but it's not the collegiate experience that I had always dreamed of, and I don't want to go to a school where all of the people from my high school are going, and I just need. To get. OUT OF HERE.

Tears out hair

That being said, can you chance me? I am so flipping panicked right now. D:

Top half of graduating class
7 college-credit classes
5 honors classes
Math has been consistently C-level because, for some reason, I can't do it no matter how hard I try
GPA raised ten points from freshman to senior year
GPA - 87 - will be up to 89 by the end of the year. I am smarter than the majority of our top ten graduates (and they have admitted this to me!) but I have had an awful time in high school: chronic depression freshman year, and my social-anxiety-schizophrenic mother has tried to kill herself five times since this time last year. Of course, I'm not going to use this as a crutch. I didn't even mention it in my essays. I just thought I would tell you.
SAT - 1940 (I put all of my grid-ins on the wrong page because I was spazzing out and am a blasted idiot)
Won't be able to take the SAT II's in time, I can't get a fee waiver by December and my parents are flatly refusing to pay.

Chance me, please? I'll chance you back...

I'm not familiar with some of the schools here. But I wouldn't waste the money on Amherst...it's pretty much like Harvard, except the rate is higher since the people who apply there are qualified and know that it's a top ranked school.

I think you have a good chance at state schools, you can always transfer too.

It's a good thing that I have fee waivers. ;) Yeah, I thought so about Amherst, but honestly -- I've heard mixed reviews, too. Some current Amherst students have told me "you're great! You can definitely get in!" and others tell me "no way, don't bother." Same with Vassar. That's why I'm so confused.

Eh, it's not really the question of transfer; wherever I go, I would prefer to stay for the next four years. I am very bad at making and keeping friends, and I think that I would feel pretty left out if I joined in something a year or two after everybody's gotten to know one another. Does that make sense?

Do you know what you want to major in? What is your weighted gpa and how what were your reading and math SAT scores?

My school doesn't weight. Reading was 660, math was 550, writing was 730, and I can do better...but I am an atrocious test-taker when it comes to this sort of thing, when I know that one messed up question can ruin me.

I plan to major and minor in some combination of biology, music, and international studies, probably neuroscience major and music/IS double minor.

I wish I had purple hair...

I would agree with you that a lot of schools on that list are reaches. Some, however, are definitely not. I don't know much about New York State schools (seeing as I live in Virginia), but your grades and SAT scores should be enough to get into most of them. What it hinges on (and I say this to pretty much everyone, including myself) is whether or not you are able to emphasize the things in your application that make you unique. This may include your leadership positions, or that random hobby that nobody knows anything about.

Best of luck, though! And I hope your mom feels better soon.

(You don't have to, but if you'd like, I'd appreciate a look at my chances: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/593381-middlebury-hamilton-amherst-do-i-have-shot.html )

Your SUNY's are looking good. (You don't want to go to Stony Brook, though. I've heard bad things.) Amherst, Vassar and Skidmore are High Reaches. Penn State is a mid-range reach, and Elmira is a definite IN. (Plus, you will get like a $12,000 a year scholarship with those grades.)

Hope this helps.
Tim

I495:
Eh, I did a pretty poor job of emphasizing the things that make me unique; I chose not to write about my home problems because it seemed like such a dreadful sap story that they must get five or six thousand times a year. I wrote about having a long distance friendship and how it makes a person grow up. Thank you for the chancing and wishes, and I will look into your thread. :**)

Tmarch291:
Wait, what's wrong with Stony Brook? And is Elmira really that slackerly...?

By "unique," I didn't mean home problems. I meant your wide-ranging music interests (you're everything from a flutist to a marching band member!) and your leadership roles on the "Mastermind" academic team. That's the kind of stuff that sets you apart.

Amherst - reach

I495:
I was tired, that semicolon should have been an "and." It was a long day. :**P I know what you meant, and unfortunately, I didn't really write about my musical abilities or the Masterminds team, but I have mentioned both of them in a couple of interviews. Unfortunately, none of the applications that I filled out asked for that sort of thing. Eck. This is going to sound dreadfully pessimistic, but I feel as though I'm not going to be accepted anywhere and will have to either reapply next year or transfer entirely. =[

Thank you for the compliment, though, and by the way -- purple hair isn't hard to do, if you're ever interested. You should try it, having unnatural colors on your head is so much fun!

Penguino9:
Thanks! Those chances are way higher than what I had been thinking.

I would suggest SUNY New Paltz as a good match for you...they have really good departments in biology, International studies and music so works for all your interests and your purple hair would fit right in. Have you visited there?

Not yet. My parents are being firm about not visiting schools until I'm accepted to them. I hear that there's an awesome burrito shop right near campus, though.

I pretty much agree with Penguin, but I think you are in at VCU, a match at VT, and think that Vassar is more of a reach. It is possible that Penn State will offer you one of their other campuses (other than their main campus, but you are a match there).

Oh, hi! It seems like you pop up in a lot of my threads, Northeastmom. Nice to see you again. ^_^

The problem with being offered at another campus is that music is only done on U Park, otherwise I would have been okay with a satellite. But hey, c'est la vie -- at least they offer an awesome graduate school, so if I'm not accepted this time around, I can always try again in 2013, which is more than can be said for most of those places. Also, I'm surprised that people are giving me such high chances at DePauw, aren't they pretty picky?

I'm wondering why you are applying to DePauw. Nothing against DePauw, but it just doesn't seem to be the same type of school as the other schools on your list -- very Greek; very conservative; lots of money; very midwestern. You just don't see many students applying to Beloit and DePauw -- Beloit and Earlham - yes; DePauw and Dennison - yes; DePauw and Hanover - yes; Beloit and Oberlin - yes. Just curious.

The conservatory. I wasn't aware that it was very conservative, but I've lived in conservative central all of my life, even despite my being an ultra-liberal -- although it can't be that bad, since Indiana went blue this time around! Honestly, the beer thing is the only thing that really bothers me. The biggest aspect of my application, though, is the conservatory (and the fact that a music major friend is positively begging me to apply; I did so partly to make him happy).

Oberlin would be nice, if only I had the grades.

Maybe a better fit then would be Lawrence University -- more conservative than Beloit, but not nearly as Greek as DePauw. They have a fine conservatory.

I was looking into Lawrence for a while, too. Like I said, I am extremely liberal, but I guess I can deal with more than one conservative college on my list. ;) The only reason I'm hesitant to apply is because my guidance counselor already said that that she doesn't know why I'm applying to sixteen places (because it's a lot of work), but since she's photocopying everything, one more to put in the mail won't kill her...

Would I have any sort of chance with my grades being what they are, honestly?

Very impressive list of ECs!
