I have weird GPA/rank correlation, common?

My GPA is around 3.6

Yet I am top 10%, which is the highest percentile rank my school gives out.

Is this kinda thing common?

I go to competitive priv school but it is not one of those famous elite private schools.

Not abnormal. I go to a pretty competitive public school and my GPA is only 3.3 but i'm also in the top 10% of my class

????????????

Well, my GPA is around 11.2 on a 15-0 scale and I'm valedictorian.

It might not be common, but I don't think it would hurt you, as you might have a 3.6 but that's near the top of your school, showing something about your school and not necessarily something that you can change.

At my school, the situation's a little different. We're insanely competitive (100 kids in the grade), but they still give out class rank. This is a major problem, since everyone from about #10-#25 have the exact same GPA, with rank determined by the ten thousandth decimal in our GPA. It's pretty ridiculous, but our councelors send out letters to our colleges explaining the situation. :]

thats a GOOD thing! it means that your high school is competative, because a low GPA in a high rank shows that your peers are also recieving low GPAs...a low rank and a high GPA means your school has more grade inflation or is not as competative...high rank and high GPA means you're not dumb (duh)...low rank low GPA means you shouldnt be applying

No it isnt. It means it's less competitive. I have ~3.3 and am top 45% or so. Try having 15 people tied for Val with 5.0s XD

it was a joke, chill out =P

ell....oh....ell....?

No.

CCers need to realize that high ranks don't immediately translate into a 5.0 uw gpa.
