I heard this stupid crap

my dad said some Ivy is now going to be using a formula for its grading scale such as.... 5 people can get A's 5 can get B's so on...... have you guys heard about this and what Ivy is it?.....this really makes me mad.

Princeton?

idk

Here you go... already discussed on another thread..

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=29129&highlight=princeton%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=29129&highlight=princeton</a></p>

To combat grade inflation, Princeton has capped the number of A's that can be given out in a class at 35%.

The policy sucks, but I still want to go there. :-P

oh thats actually not so bad.....is it?

I don't like grade capping because it creates a cutthroat environment. Only so many people can get an A, regardless of how hard they work.

35% A's is still a very large amount.

There was a test in a Psych class here 1st semester where the class average was a 70%. No curve. Yea, half the class got a D+ or lower on it.

I've had tests where the class average is a 45.. now that's a hard test.. 35 percent a's, man, princeton sounds like cake :P I don't think ive ever had a class where 35 percent of the grades were a's (other than like basic 100/200 level introductory stuff)...

I don't see how this is different from any curved class? We typically curve the median to a certain grade and 1 std. dev above that equals 1/2 - 1 full grade higher, etc. If you understand std. deviations, this means only a certain percentage of people can get a certain grade. 35% A's is very generous.

35% is a really high number.

for my econ class at Michigan, grading is distributed
25% A's, 35% B's, 30% C's, the rest D's and F's

It's a curve, and it's a good idea I think. It creates distinction in terms of academics. That those who get the A's worked their butts off to get it. And it has it's advantages. If you're in the top 35%, and you're getting a B, you can get a A.

I think that the grade capping is sort of a good thing. I think that if you are receiving an A, this signifies that you are producing some of the best work of the class, excellent, hard work. It may seem a little unfair, but if everyone else has an A in the class, then is that class, is an A really an A to you? It can also help, if the class is difficult, it rolls you striaght to an A.

Now that i think about it it is good ....because it sounds like the people at princeton all didnt deserve the A's
