I honestly am terrified that I won't get into any good colleges

High school junior interested in Business major.

This is my updated info:

Volunteer Service:

Hobbies:

-fanworks on fanfiction.net

From what I've seen on this website, I'm nothing. The only AP I have is Econ (1 sem macro and 1 sem micro) which I will take next year.

My school doesn't rank, but the average student takes at least 1 AP soph, junior, and senior year - and honors as well. I dropped out of honors trig and that was enough to make me feel like a failure.

The only thing I can see as my hail mary is my creative writing. I write gay romance for young adults and do fanwriting as well. I know my writing skills will help with my essay, but that's about it.

My dad has high hopes that I can get into Berkeley or Santa Barbara or even Stanford. I keep telling him that I have extremely low chances of getting in. Especially since my school is one of the more competative schools. He gets angry and things escalate into an argument.

As long as I can get into St. Mary's College of CA, University of SF, Santa Clara Univ, he'll be happy.

What can I do to make myself something valuable to colleges? If not my academics, then maybe my writing? It'd be nice if you could chance me for SMCCA, USF, SCU, and maybe colleges in CA that would be a match for me?

As well, does race affect acceptance? I'm Russian/Filipino.

According to the ruling of a few court cases, race should not play a role in your admissions. However, students always say race does matter.

Anyways. . . you don’t appear to be a failure. You haven’t gotten any D’s or F’s have you? And to make a school want you, you have to challenge yourself and take AP or honors courses. If you really do not wish to strive in this academic field, you can aim for amazing personal statements (with your skills in writing) and above average SAT scores.

Also, in UC’s it is not solely based on grades, though you shouldn’t have any D’s or F’s. Usually they want to see commitment to clubs or volunteering services. In UC’s, if not combining these activities/ commitments with grades, combine them with your SAT scores.

I’m only basing this knowledge off of what I hear from my peers / teachers. Ask your counselor if you really do feel uneasy.

I can’t really provide anything on SMCCA, USF, SCU, do not really know to much about them.

You are well within the range of many of the CSU campuses. Review the California State University application on http://www.calstate.edu/sas/publications/documents/admissionhandbook.pdf

Your CSU eligibility index is 1800 + 3.9 x 800 which is greater than the minimum requirement of 2900. While some CSU campuses are quite selective (as for example Cal Poly SLO), others, such as CSU SF are less so.

Also you are well within the range of University of San Francisco.

You also are within the range of some of the UCs, as for example Merced, Riverside and Santa Cruz. Talk to you college counselor.

I don’t see why you’re too worried you have a lot of extra curriculars and your GPA is near perfect. You seem like an ideal students to get into a good college or university. The only thing I would suggest is getting your SAT score up. 1800 is good but it’s always safe to get it higher. Don’t worry about not getting into a good college, because you definitely will. Worrying about it will only hurt you.

I think as long as you keep trying you can get into any of the Cal State schools, even Cal Poly. I think Cal Poly is an underrated school.
I assume you live in California.
USF is low match schools for you. Santa Clara is a match. I don’t know why you would want to go there when Cal Poly.
I think you are a match for UC Davis or UC Irvine. You have one more shot at the SAT and ACT so do your best.
Berkley and Standford are definitely reach schools.
Also a good business program out west is University of Arizona. Also from what I hear a pretty fun school.

I seriously think you’re selling yourself short. A 3.9 UW is nothing to scoff at. And most people know that colleges prefer an A in a regular class to a B/C in an AP, so I think your lack of APs isn’t as big of a problem as your think it is. An 1800 SAT is low but you have time. If you break 2000, you’re in good shape stat-wise. And this current semester isn’t over, so get all As; you might hit or break 4.0 W. Your ECs are a bit standard, but that’s not a problem. You won’t get into Stanford. Sorry, but that’s for sure. Berkeley’s a stretch, but you never know. If you can seriously bring up your SAT, then I think SB and Davis are done deals. If you can somehow hit 2100+, then UCSD is a solid match.

I think your chances are great. I wouldn’t worry if I were you. Just keep your grades up. Your well within the reach of those schools.

Maybe enter some writing/essay competitions, might even get a scholarship.
Use your passion.

Also why don’t you consider a field of study like journalism or english to compliment your business major

I think you should apply to colleges of which YOU are interested in, as opposed to the schools your father is interested in.
I think it’s cool that you write gay fanfiction and I think colleges (esp some of the more progressive ones) will look at that as really unique.

I’d say try to research some essay / writing competitions or try to get published in a literary magazine to really beef up the whole “this-kid-is-a-good-writer” thing you got going on.

facepalm: THIS IS WHY I DON’T LIKE COLLEGE CONFIDENTAL. SOME SNOBBY KID SAYS THEY ARE TOO STUPID AND LIE ABOUT THEIR EXTRACURRICULARS TO MAKE PEOPLE WHO CANT HANDLE IT FEEL LIKE SHIT!!! TOP SCHOOLS SHOULDNT BE THIS HARD LOL
