Does anyone here know how "good" the electronic scorers that the ETS uses are? At my high school a lot of teachers use Scantron machines to score multiple choice tests, and they rutinely mark erased answers as being the intended answer, which constantly creates problems. The teachers either have to go over them by hand, or the kids have to do so after they get the tests back to catch any errors the Scantron machine made. I would hope that the ETS's machines would be top-of-the line and such, yet if they weren't then scores could easily be changed by >50 points because of the machine. Any comments on this?

You would hear about it if it was an issue. I'm sure there are enough kids that check all the ones they got wrong from the test if they order the package that gives you a copy of the test.

The scanners used are not like scan-trons. The whole form is scanned and stored digitally. If the scanning detects an error, the digital image can be viewed by a real person. All marks, including many erasures, can bee seen on the scanned forms.
