I Know I know..

I know there are a bunch of other threads on this but I'm really confused on the whole extra letter of recommendation thing. A lot of the colleges I'm applying require reccs from the past two years of school but the teachers who know me the very best as a student and person taught me in freshman and sophomore year. Should I call the admin office, explain my situation, and ask or go with the extra which I've heard scary stories of

I would not use a freshman year teacher since presumably those high school years are a time of much personal and academic growth and you should be in a position to be better evaluated at the tail end of things. Sophomore year would be OK assuming your other recommendation was Jr./Sr. year. It is always a good idea to take a second course from a beloved Freshman/Sophomore teacher since you know this is a teacher you like and the second course puts your recommender in a position to show how much he/she really knows you. Do not send the freshman recommendation along with two junior/senior ones since this may annoy your admissions officer who already has plenty to read.
