Hello,

Little bit of background I am currently a community college student transferring to the neighboring university to Major in Computer Science and Minor in Information Systems in the Spring of 2015. This semester I am taking two essay intensive courses Communications 101 and Sociology 111 with an emporium Math 100 class. I also work full-time (normally 48 hours a week) on second shift with an hours commute. I am going to be on campus 4 days a week literally until its time to go to work. Now normally I would say done there but campus computers take a long time to load, say 5 minutes to login and an additional 3 to pull up any program. Not to mention I know I am going to need one here in about a year.

Is it worth is to get a laptop now, and if so what laptop would you recommend? My price range right now is about $700.

Thanks

Transferring in Spring of 2016, sorry

To be honest, I would wait for the laptops to lower in prices for as long as you can wait. If you have something to work with now, just try to get along with that, unless you feel that it is a hindrance to your performance in classes. For example, I am holding onto a laptop because it meets the requirements for the computer science/engineering majors at any school. No need to unnecessarily shell out money on something barely better in noticeable performance than the one I currently have.

If you absolutely need a laptop and are not going to spend money on another for more than five or six years, get one that is $1000+. It is just much better than one you will find for $700, and you will thank me for that.

However, if you feel that you absolutely need a laptop, but just want it to be decent, there are plenty for around the $500 mark that will last you a fair bit, and most likely meet the requirements for your computer science major in the college you are in, and transferring to.

Just PM me if you want some of my suggestions, as I was recently doing a search on this same thing and came across some great finds.

Samsung ativ book 9, it’s like the pc version of a MacBook air. Great for college.
