I'm really interested in attending UR, not just for the academic opportunities, but because the people seem really down-to-earth, and intellectual. I'm afraid that my stats are too low, even though UR does consider each application holistically. My scores are in the average range, my GPA is good, but below average, and my ECs are ok, but not distinguishing. Any comments, epecially from surrent students would be greatly appreciated. If you only say a yes, or no, and give me one thing to do to improve my chances, I would be grateful. So, here it is...

SAT I: CR: 680, M: 670, W: 700
SAT II: Math IC: 720, Math IIC: 680

GPA Weighted, but only slightly: 3.611/4.0
Class Rank: 43/208 top 21%

*I would like you to understand that I go to a very competitive high school, which accounts for my low GPA and class rank. Every year my school sends a few people to ivys, and other similar schools.

Also, my school considers a 4.0 to be over 98%, not 96% as in most schools. I asked the Greenes on petersons.com on their weekly chat, and they said 96% was pretty much the standard 4.0. Considering this, my GPa would probably be slightly higher, because my 3.9s would actually be 4.0s, and some of my 3.8s would be 4.0s would be as well.

My GPA is cumulative, and is low because I really didn't care much about school until junior year. My GPA each year is as follows:

9th: 3.39
10th: 3.572
11th: 3.871

As you can see, I am on an upward trend. (also consider the strange GPA system that my school uses.)*

Also, I'm worried that I haven't taken enough honors classes (only 6 by the time I graduate), even though my school offers plenty. We don't offer AP though, but our honors are actually tougher than AP.

ECs: Ski Club- member and possibly a position
Project Harmony- member (3 years) and chairperson (1 year)
SADD- 2 years
Girls Scouts- 11 years
Work at Hospital- volunteer- 30 hours as of now (at least 50 by the time I apply)
Softball- 11 years (2 for school, 1 summer league, 8 little league)
Various Art Classes in school and out of school (pottery, photography, drawing)

I have done softball for 11 years, since t-ball, but I'm not very good. I love the sport, and bonding with my teammates, but even at my small school of 800 I was cut from the school team. (We didn't have JV this year because of a lack of interest). I chose to continue playing by doing a summer league, and hope to play again next year.

I have been a girl scout for 11 years, from the beginning, but I haven't earned the gold award yet, and will not do so by the time I apply. (This is the highest award in girl scouting). Also, I am not very passionate about girl scouts, and simply do it because I have no reason to quit.

Considering this, I don't want to write about either of these activities. I am thinking about writing about a bad camp experience, where I left 2 days into the 2 week session. I plan to desribe why, and it will be very thoughtful. (In my opinion, that is). Either that, or I will write about art, and how the great artists are famous because of their ability to capture emotion, and convey it to their audience. I will then say how something is missing from my art, and this is it. I will continue to try to acheive more than just a pretty image through my art. Tell me what you think of these ideas.

Awards: Academic Art Award (for 11th grade)- school-wide competition
Girls Scout Silver Award- for community service with girl scouts
I plan to enter a city-wide art competition in the fall for photography. The judging will be September 28th, so if I win anything, it will be on my application

I am thinking about an art minor, and I was commissioned this summer to draw the religious school cover, which I did for charity, and received many compliments on.

Tell me what you think, and anything you think I should improve upon. Thanks.
