I'm a Junior in High School which is the most crucial year in high school. For the past two years I've done well, mostly A's and B's. Then I moved and went to a different high school and I also enrolled into PSEO classes. If you don't know what that is, PSEO is college courses where a high school student can earn college credits. They attend at the college so they are surrounded by college students. Well, for me, I'm failing US history which I'm taking as an online class. I should have never done that.

When I say I'm failing, I mean I'm failing with a big fat F. A zero! This is the first time I've ever failed a class, literally Fail it. The class started out difficult and when things become difficult I become less motivated to do better. So, I put it off. I didn't join discussions or turn in papers. I let my insecurities take the best of me. And now I'm facing the consequences. This class is a requirement in order to graduate. And my parents and peers have high expectations of me. And so do I. I want to get into a good college and get a good grade. I don't want to be stuck with low-wage jobs through out my life. The semester is OVER in a month! And I'm ready to cry right now because I have no idea what to do. My mom thinks I'm doing good in this class but I'm not. And I'm super scared what my mom will do because she is very important to me. She's helped me through thick and thin and I feel that I've failed her. I feel that I've failed my teacher because I told him I'd do my best. I've been lying to people that I'm doing well in school when I'm not. I don't know if I should talk to my counselor because I'll probably cry in front of her. She had high expectations of me and I'm embarrassed that I let her down.

And I just want to splurge my feelings on here. My biggest worry is that this will hinder me from getting into good colleges such as my home state university. Have you guys failed a class but still got into a pretty good college? What should I do? Should I stop PSEO altogether and just stay in High School? Should I talk to my counselor?

You’re not going to be earning minimum wage just because you failed an online class.

Your counselor is there to help you, don’t worry about making a fool out of yourself. Let her know how you’re feeling, she will be able to help you the most.

It’s better to do well in high school than to do terribly in a PSEO class. Forget about grades, do you find the content interesting? Are you a history person, or are you more of a math person? If you think that the classes in your high school are too easy (and you can maintain a 100 average easily), then definitely continue doing classes at your local college, but consider taking a class in a different subject.

You still have a month left in the semester; I’m sure you’ll be able to push through and bump your grade up at least a little in that time. Can you talk to your professor? If I were in your shoes, I would send him an email/talk to him face-to-face depending on the situation and tell him my situation exactly. Don’t ask for points, just show a genuine interest in wanting to improve. “I let my grade discourage me from applying myself to the class the past [3 months? 4 weeks?], but I still really want to do well and know that I will definitely gain more from this class than a similar class in my high school.” Ask what you can do to improve whatever caused you to fail in the first place - tests/quizzes? Inquire about extra assignments and things you can do other than the homework he/she assigns to help you better grasp the material.

Don’t give up, it’s only one semester! Grades don’t determine a person’s self-worth or intelligence - if you hadn’t let your grade discourage you, you most likely wouldn’t be failing. Learn to learn for the sake of learning rather than to earn a grade; your grades will automatically see an improvement as a result. Seek out interesting things about US History - even if you’re a math/science geek (I totally am), there’s something quirky and interesting to be learned in every subject!

Hope I helped a little - please do let me know if you ever need to spill again. (:

Thank you very much for the encouragement and for you input!
I think I’ll try to persevere through this and work hard to get at least a passing grade. But do you think this will hinder me from getting into a good college? By good, I mean a State University I know this will be a huge blemish on my school transcript.

Don’t colleges only see your final grade (average of all quarters/semesters)? I don’t think you ruined your chances of getting into a state university, especially if it’s your state flagship (in-state applicants typically have a higher chance than out-of-state applicants), but you definitely want to show an upward trend in grades (i.e. don’t fail again).

Anytime! (:
