I like the Campus BUT,,,,,

As there were some innuendos about the possibility of prison escapes from the prisons located in the area, I decided to do some fact checking on google. As far as I could tell by my search there have not been any escapes noted. As I thought…I really will now stop feeding the ■■■■■.

While it was intended to lighten up the discussion, your research and post are incorrect.

Here’s one …took about 20 sec to google:
http://www.prisoners.com/johnston.html</a></p>

Story of a murderer/lifer.

Here’s a related piece that quotes the Huntingdon mayor. See what she has to say when they were closing the towers.

http://www.altoonamirror.com/page/content.detail/id/528400.html</a></p>

No need for name calling holliesue. IF there is ANY inaccurate information (other than that I’ve pointed out), please do edify readers. It would be helpful. But please, no name calling. It’s inappropriate and violates rules of the road. The purpose of the forum is to provide information, not to assuage parental egoes in need of assurance and massage.

If you’re going to “shoot?” Shoot straight. ;)

I actually found both those articles. The last escape was in 1999, so in my opinion that is a very, very low risk level and I felt you were painting in a very broad stroke by bringing it up in post # 18. Basta…

Whoops. Thanks for “straightening out” what was “actually” found. ;)

So is the storming of the Arch dangerous? My daughter thought that was a pretty cool tradition.

My family and I toured Juniata on a bleak, rainy day and liked the town and loved the school. The picture painted by WhistlePig bears no resemblance to what we saw. I suggest people go and see the college. It is a great place, a nice town and a very impressive school.

MDdad2012…look at the posts on youtube…let’s just say, my daughter intends to be a bystander and cheering on those classmates of hers that are just crazy enough to want to try to storm by a bunch of rugby players!!! ha ha!!
I don’t think there have been any really serious injuries, but definitely some bloody noses and scratches…

I thought it was interesting that of all the colleges we have visited so far, Juniata was the only one without card scanners on the doors or blue emergency boxes. The tour guide said that students tend to leave their doors unlocked. It must be a pretty safe campus.

Following along, thanks for everyone’s thoughts.

I have a “system” for checking out the relative vibrancy of a community outside a college, which involves looking at the location on Google maps and then googling for “places nearby.” At that point, I begin looking for street views to see what things look like on the ground. FWIW. It’s no substitute for going somewhere, but if one is deciding between visits to one place or another, it could help whittle down a list. The area outside the college is a bigger deal for some kids than others. My child has flat out rejected schools on drive-bys simply because of the surrounding locale. For other kids, that’s not a concern. Or, more to the point, their notion of what they want in a surrounding locale is different from my daughter’s.

Also, though I’m a “junior member” here I must say that I have found Whistle Pig’s posts to be very helpful during my own search, and I object to him (I should know this, but I think WP is a “him”) being referred to as a “■■■■■.” No question, Whistle Pig has done EXTENSIVE on-the-ground research on colleges. The Whistle Pig is not spewing pablum; certainly, this member of the community has a distinct point of view, a sometimes edgy sense of humor and an occasionally provocative style. But a “■■■■■”? Come on!

And, btw, if my child heard about an escape from a nearby prison that had happened during her lifetime, that would be plenty recent enough for her. In fact, I will make sure we do no research on prison escapes anywhere within a 200-mile radius of any school she’s considering, lest we end up with no schools on the list.

Thanks sweetmarie. I realize, this is a “purchasing” issue, i.e. like alot of the lemon vehicles I’ve bought, cannot “afford” to "see"things the way a dealer or a real estate agent might. They see the full monty. I see what I need to in light of my post-purchase decision. Can “afford” no less.

And really, these things are “beauty” contests. One size does not fit all. Some like brunettes. Some like blondes. Some like boys. So everyone has his own “eyes.” And his own opinions. But not his own facts. Thems is what they is.

And when all else fails, shoot the messenger. My motto? “Always put on the full-bawdy armour He has offered. Bettern kevlar.” ;)

Relative to crime issues, it may be that death-row escapes might not be of great concern. Not sure it would be for me. Of greater concern, yesterday’s front-page lead story in local papers and TV stations … warrant and felony arrests of JC students in different locales, one a dorm, where there was allegedly growing, mfg, and selling bad stuff. Certainly not unique nor rare (altho mfg and distributing would rightly be deemed a much different issue than occasional use and possession), but in light of discussion of criminal activity relative to the campus, ironic coincidence.

So much for touting delight of not locking doors nor having any residence security systems. That might purely be function of lack of funds and willingness to assume those risks vs. a preferred security MO. Not familiar w/ JC’s endowment or financial status. In any case, no matter its effectiveness, I’d not assume that’s a good sign of anything. Not like family-style dining and a dress code at the Sunday noon meal.

Whistle Pig, what is your involvement with Juniata? You seem quick to bring it down. It’s almost as if you are a disgruntled student or parent. I am trying to decide how much weight to give your comments, but your role is very unclear.

Can you be specific. What information is inaccurate or unavailable? Please edify, clarify, correct. My understanding is this is to share information about these institutions. Would you prefer only good news? Only bad news? Or all you can know?

Whisle Pig, your comments about Juniata and Huntingdon in this thread are overwhelmingly negative. Your tone toward other posters is sarcastic, rude and insulting. All of this bitterness combines to damage your credibility.

No one doubts the veracity of the facts you spew. But, if you were communicating like this in a face-to-face discussion people would probably roll their eyes, laugh in your face, or simply walk away because it’s so obnoxious. And you really do sound like someone with a chip on your shoulder.

Seriously, if you hate the school that much, why do you even come around its forum?

The media says same of Donald Trump. They hate the way he calls it the way it is. I confess. He’s probably worth twice my own net. :frowning:

But can we stick to the facts, pls. and leave your perceptions for elsewhere. If you’ve a different view, let’s hear your spew beyond that you’ve already offered. Please.

You think Trump, a birther nut, “calls it he way it is.” I’ll take your attacks on Juniata as a huge positive for Juniata.

;) atta girl. This could be a match made in heaven!

Your comments about the town and its crime do not seem to match what I and others observed. I was there in person last week and it does not match your description, IMHO. Please answer my question about your relationship with the school. Are you a parent or student? You sound like you have an ax to grind.

His description doesn’t match what you, I or others have seen, because his description is not true. He is ignoring your question because he doesn’t want us to know where he is coming from. The rest of us are engaging in honest discussion. He is just wasting our time.
