As someone from California, it is too cold during the winters. I love all aspects of UMich except for the brutally cold winters. Are there any schools with a similar atmosphere that are located in a not so cold climate?
Cal and Michigan certainly have similarities. I’d imagine same for UVA.
I’m a native Left Coaster, and experienced brutal winters in A2. Looking back, I’m actually glad I experinced those winters. B-)
kkendall, I grew up in very warm area (much warmer than California), and I had no trouble adjusting to Michigan winters. They are cold to be sure, but manageable.
You are not going to find a university that is as well-rounded as Michigan. The combination of elite academics across all disciplines, world-class faculty and facilities, cutting-edge research, incredible institutional wealth, gifted and intellectually-driven yet approachable student body, excellent professional placement, awesome athletic tradition, great college town etc…is unique to Michigan.
That being said, here’s a list of great schools in milder/warmer climates:
California Institute of Technology
Claremont McKenna College
Davidson College
Duke University
Georgetown University
Georgia Institute of Technology
Harvey Mudd College
Haverford College
Pomona College
Rice University
Stanford University
Swarthmore College
University of California-Berkeley
University of California-Los Angeles
University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
University of Pennsylvania
University of Southern California
University of Texas-Austin
University of Virginia
Vanderbilt University
Look at Stanford and Duke if you’re a competitive applicant.
Yea thank you for the input. I am not quite that competitive of an applicant for Stanford. Michigan is a match/slight-stretch. So basically I am looking at schools with similar or lesser selectivity to Michigan, but with a similar overall atmosphere.
Haverford, Swat, and Penn still get plenty of winter. There is not really anyplace like Michigan.
UNC, UT Austin
University of Florida, Gainesville
University of Texas, Austin
University of South Carolina, Columbia
University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa
^^^If you’re going to list USC and UA, you might as well start listing many more schools down south and out west.
agree with @rjkofnovi, those schools definitely have a different flavor compared to Michigan. Not many schools have even a similar flavor, but agree with UNC, UT Austin, the Cal schools. Rice and Tulane are good options as well. Nonetheless, I personally did enjoy South Carolina. They give a great deal of aid to high achieving individuals and have nice facilities.
It depends on whether you can afford to go out of state. If you can, UT-Austin and Texas A&M are a lot warmer.
