I’ve been seeing a lot of posts from rejected students and their parents who keep claiming that admissions for RD to BU was just a numbers game and that’s why they didn’t get in. But if that was the case, I wouldn’t have gotten in. But I got in, and received the Cohen scholarship, which covers everything except room and board.
My GPA is a 4.0 UW 4.3 W and my ACT is a 30 composite. While I may think these are good stats, I must be honest and say that they’re simply average for this school.
I’m seeing posts from rejected students with much, much higher scores and stronger GPAs than mine. Students who would seem to be a top candidate and placed before me.
But, when it comes down to admissions, there’s no magic number that will guarantee acceptance. Nothing is a given, even if you have a 1600 and a 36 and a 4.0 UW 4.8 W. Nothing is a given.
I got in because I had a unique story to tell - just like everyone does - and I did a good job of telling it. I worked hard on my essays. At the end of the day, it was my good essays and LORs and very strong ECs that gained me an acceptance. Not a GPA or SAT/ACT score.
Excellent post! Congratulations!
Congratulations!!
Congratulations for your success. That said, I think every high stats candidates being rejected have #1) worked hard #2) have good essays #3) have good story to tell. They are rejected maybe #1) competing in a highly competitive major vs peers #2) no hooks and/or wrong demographics - how many Asian pre-meds/BMEs can a school like BU can fill all at once and many times over #3) interest level, will they even come if they are being accepted and #4) financial burden, why accept someone knowingly w/o aid this person will have no way to finance the studies, better off to let the person go elsewhere. It is great that you have been awarded with your hard work,but I would also congratulate those who have tried and being rejected (esp. with significantly higher stats). One will never know why a school is accepting or rejecting someone. I would not be so quick to assume the other high stats kids being rejected because they are all lousy writers and boring pumpkins with nothing special to offer. My own son was rejected outright by a school 40 spots lower than his acceptance by UMich and CWRU, and he got into JHU while rejected by BU in the span of twenty-four hrs. Same person, same common app essay, same LoRs, same ECs, same scores… and yet. JMHO/
also ngl but demographics feel a lot of it. ive seen from your other posts that youre native and registered with a tribe. that kind of thing matters a lot to these schools. youve worked hard and done well and do deserve to go there on academics but all this stuff factors in too.
Wow congrats! I had stats similar to yours and many ECs/leadership positions related to my major. Didn’t work out the same for me though. I wish you the best at BU!
to clear up what i’m saying: everyone has a unique story to tell. i never said the amazing rejected students were lousy writers. the point of this post was to say that scores aren’t everything
@Mickey2Dad well said.
Help. Son got accepted to college of Fine arts for voice. Only 10k scholarship. Any chance of getting more before deposit deadline? Ty
@Flats4310 If merit aid, no. If need based aid you can ask.
