Im a junior at Berkmar High in Lilburn,Georgia. I have started to look into colleges i would like to go to. Ill be going for a major in the Study of Film and hope to have a career in film editing. Im extremely smart, i scored a 92% on my PSAT in 10th and a 96% on my PSAT in 11th. I take A.P. U.S. History, Honors Junior Language Arts, Honors Physics, Algebra 2 but capable of doing Calculus, Advanced Video and Film, and an Independent Study course in which me and 3 others make films and send participate in Film Festivals. I have several problems, they all surround my worries that my GPA will cause most schools to look past me with a laugh. My freshman year, first semester, i made the dumb mistake of not attending except maybe twice every 3 weeks. After that semester, i moved to my current school in Georgia recieving 0 credits from first semester, bad start for my GPA. On top of this, i am smart enough to not do anything besides take tests and do the occasional classwork and still maintain C's with ease, in this lies my main problem, because im so lazy yet inteligent, i dont have to study and do all the homework, hence my grade is not an A. If i did everything id have close to 95+ in all classes including my AP course. My thing is, on my transcript, last i saw bout 3 months ago, i had a 1.8GPA, ya i know, so will the schools see that and just throw me out the window? Is it too late to make it up to a decent number? and if i managed to get it mid twos, maybe high twos, will a school take notice in that i increased dramatically junior and senior year, instead of looking at my dump in freshman year? I recently also submitted an Early-Admissions form to the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe,Arizona, anybody have a clue on whether i can make it there?

“Im extremely smart”

“On top of this, i am smart enough to not do anything besides take tests and do the occasional classwork and still maintain C’s with ease”

“because im so lazy yet inteligent, i dont have to study and do all the homework”

No, I actually don’t think you’re as smart as you say you are. Don’t give your self too much credit- you come off as another failure who justifies his poor grades with the usual “I am smart- but I fail at life because I was lazy” . Everyone, and I say this with no hesitation, has the ability to excel in any course if they put their mind to it- and the fact that you’re getting C’s without studying clearly speaks to your lack of intelligence. If you didn’t need to study, you would be getting As, thus you NEED to study. I don’t know about you- but I don’t think anyone in their right minds would brag about a near failing grade regardless of how little studying was done prior to the exam. And to answer your question regarding your chances at that university- you should look up the freshmen stats of the school to get a better idea of your competitiveness relative to the general undergrad applicants pool.

Good luck.

wow…burnnnn :'(

Just an aside–have you been tested for ADD and similar? I don’t think most kids want to be lazy, many smart kids are easily distracted because they’re wired differently.

Try 2 year at a community college, get your act together and then you’ll get a fresh start.

UAT is actually pretty intense. Although the film background you’ve alluded to would be helpful, the GPA and work ethic you’ve described wouldn’t be too welcome there. Also note that it’s basically an office-building school; as an out-of-stater, you’d have to get an apartment or make other living arrangements. What hmom5 suggests is probably a better approach all around – get it together and prove yourself at a community college first, rather than trying to push your not-so-hot record and throwing a lot of money at your first year or two of adjustment to college life. And maybe get a roommate with whom you can have an accountability pact, so you might actually show up for your classes…

People re-invent themselves all the time. It sounds like that might be what you’re going to do. If so, good luck – and finish strong!

The PSATs are not scored in percentages – I mean, there are percentile ranks, but you would have to give one for each section, not overall. And your scores for each section would be more helpful, as few people around here know what those percentile ranks convert to. Anyway, I am sure you are very intelligent, but SAT scores are not indicative of intelligence. That’s not what they were designed to do.

The fact is, most colleges are not selective like the top colleges most CC kids here want to attend. There are many colleges and universities that will take you with a 2.xx GPA, and of course there is always the option of attending a community college for a few years. I had a friend in high school who was very much like you; he didn’t like to do any school work and graduated with a 2.xx GPA. He was accepted to his top choice university (Florida A&M) and as far as I know he was doing relatively well there.

However, you’re going to have to work on that work ethic. College (and life) is not just about how smart you are; it’s about perseverance and how hard you work as well. You won’t be able to get through college if you don’t want to complete any work.

Zenbadabing’s words, though harsh, are true. If you didn’t need to study, you would have As and Bs, not Cs. Cs are indicative of a need to study.
