I messed up... badly

So I submitted my application for a congressional nomination from my U.S. Congressman roughly 3 weeks ago, and the deadline closed 3 days ago. Today, I just discovered that I submitted a letter of recommendation addressed to my U.S. Senator in my application packet to my Congressman, while I have the letter of recommendation addressed to my Congressman at home. The application deadline has passed and I'm extremely scared that this mistake might cost me a nomination or maybe even the interview itself. Please, I need help. Any advice is greatly appreciated

Call your Congressman’s office and explain.

a lack of attention to detail. it could hurt you during your interview.
don’t make any excuses if you get a chance to have an interview. Explain what happened and then move on.
Excuses would be: “I was rushing through the application/nomination process and messed it up”, “By the time I found out, the deadline had closed.”

My instant thinking was “Own the mistake, exactly the way someone who was already a cadet would”. Act as if you already have the “job”.

In practice, that translates to precisely the advice above. Explain, but don’t excuse. Take responsibility and stand tall.

FWIW - if you follow the above three posts, I don’t think it will affect your chances of receiving a nomination. I doubt that a congressperson will pass over the best qualified applicant (if that’s you) just because of a mix up in which LOR you sent.

Good Luck!
