During my first Quarter at Cal Poly Pomona I didn’t really adjust as well as I wanted too. My major is Mechanical Engineering and I took 16 units as a first time freshmen. I went it with really high hopes but the reality hit me about halfway through the quarter and I was just really slacking. I ended the quarter with a 2.28 GPA and I know that with those grades I will not receive any scholarships for next year since they use the fall quarter grades, Since I live on campus I need a scholarship so I do not add to my already 11,000 in debt that i acquired this year alone. I was also hoping to apply for summer fellowship programs but my GPA really crushed those dreams. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do or any programs I can Apply for ? If so that would be great.
You need to talk to the FA reps at CPP. How have you already accrued $11K in loans?
(unrelated to the core question of this post but) you won’t be able to get an internship at a top tech company with that GPA, but all hope isn’t dead. Many engineering employers are willing to look past terrible GPAs if you have the skills; contact local firms and see if any might.
I agree. Go in and talk with a financial aid officer. Seek their support, input and help. Engineering is a tough course of study and many students have similar grades. I don’t think they should penalize students who are willing to study difficult topics.
I interpreted this more as OP’s concern that she/he won’t be competitive for Term & Endowed/similar scholarships from the school. Which, they’re probably right – there are engineers with 4.0s. Happens at every school.
But as far as meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards by the end of the year, OP, you can pull your grades up and meet them. But go talk to an FA officer in the mean time to get a full understanding of what you need to do to recover.

Hi,
I am not happy at my college choice. I am a freshmen and I just started my second quarter of college. I currently attend Cal Poly Pomona and I can say I am not happy here. My major is Mechanical Engineering and I know that this is a great school to be at for this major. This school however was not my first choice and to be honest I did not know it existed until I applied to SLO and found out. I got denied from UCLA, UCSB, SLO, DAVIS all for the same major. I guess I just really settled.
I live on campus and because of this I am in huge debt only counting my first year. I really love this school academically, I wish i could be a commuter, every time I am in class I love all the knowledge I am attaining. What I really dislike about this school is that it is a commuter campus and it is not really a “on campus friendly” school. I live about 2 hours away from campus which is why It was not an option for me to commute. I also feel that many of the conversations here all lead up to the question “Where did you not get accepted” and “was this your first choice”. Sadly most of the people here just chose to come here so they wouldn’t have to be at home and they didn’t get accepted to their dream school. (at least that’s how I feel)
During my first quarter here I did not do well I ended up with a 2.28 GPA. I have to retake my calculus class and because of this I lost my priority registration. I made some friends but they are not as dedicated to their studies as I am so i feel it’s really hard to concentrate when I am around them, however when I am alone I feel empty inside.
The only time I feel I was really happy was when I was with my girlfriend, she would motivate me to do well and at that time I forgot about the whole “I don’t like it here” feelings. She just broke up with me and well I am at the lowest I have ever been in life.
I think that maybe going back home for a year then transferring to a school I really always wanted to go to Like UCLA, or UCSB would really do me well. However I don’t know. I know that If i get my B.S here at Cal Poly Pomona I will have a promising future in engineering because of all the hands on learning that we get here. Instead of all the theoretical learning that I would receive at a UC. But I just really don’t know.
If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated thanks guys.

Did your parents co-sign loans? how did you end up with so much debt?
You should try to finish this year, and then go home and do your soph year at a local CC. since you weren’t accepted to those other schools, I suspect that maybe you “want” to be an engineer, but your math/science skills aren’t where they need to be.
Frankly, it’s too bad that you began this quarter. You should have started at a CC this semester to stop the accumulation of debt.
personally I have under my name about 5500 in government loans, while my parents took out a 6000 dollar loan to help me pay for the housing. Even though technically I only owe about half I take on my parents loan as my own. That is where the 11k comes from.
Honey, it sounds like you are pretty down. I would go talk to the counselling service as well. It sounds like you’ve had a rough go of it.
Are you sure there isn’t a probationary period for your scholarship? I have seen anywhere from a term to a year to get it back up. I would make an appt with the dean of students. You are not the first person this has happened to. Believe me they welcome students to come in and talk. Give them a chance to help you. Wishing you the best. Chin up ok? This is recoverable!
