I might actually go to Oberlin...

I dunno my parents were talking about my choices today since this is the last day to decide really and they liked Oberlin cuz it seemed less career oriented, and you have more freedom in courses to take. They thought CMU would be teaching me stuff that would prepare me straight for a job which they prefer to have like a broad liberal arts background.

I guess what they said kinda rubbed off on me... i dunno o_o.

Sounds like 2.5 to .5 towards Oberlin, with your undecided counted as .5
Yea, Oberlin.

What's your opinion?

What are you planning to major in?

Wow these are very different schools. Country vs city. Liberal arts vs technology. Very left leaning (PC reigns) vs more middle of the road (slightly left)...

I'm sure Oberlin is less career oriented but CMU is hardly a vocational school either.

Good luck, both great schools.

I agree; CMU really does make you very marketable (as can be seen by consistent job rankings, recruiter rep, and starting salaries) but it is often overlooked that not everyone wants this.

The freedom of courses thing is a bit wrong though because CMU requires a minor or a concentrated track and students are allowed to take courses in any other school.

Some kids stretch their legs and pick up 2-3 majors while others (a majority of Tepper students) choose to focus in a track such as finance or marketing etc. More tech kids tend to do a 5 year masters in their respective fields or a 5 year MBA so I guess this is where the "focus on career" rumor comes from.

Just wanted to clear that "freedom in courses to take" because it really annoys me when such stereotypes take so long to die.

Anyways, congrats and good luck at Oberlin!

You should go with what YOU want,
not what your parents want!!
And don't think ONLY about academics,
what if the people at Oberlin suck?!
You have people who play Mafia and ERS (although not very well) here.

haha, but really, it's up to you.
go for whatever will make you happy.

Do you have any idea where your interests lie? What are your goals?

To play devils advocate...

You should think about how much your parents worked to get get you where you are, they've had goals and dreams they may be living through you. And you definately should be thinking about which gives the better academic situation, and remember, people at CMU could really suck too!

Tossing all that aside, its really up to you mate :-p if you post on this forum, you'll obviously get a slant toward favoritism toward CMU, we just all cant help it. Pick the decision that suits you best mate, and not just what your parents want, cause in the end its what you have in mind. If you end up doing what your parents favor, you may end up hating yourself and your parents if it goes wrong...

Maybe posting on the parents' forum would be helpful. Also, as Tooya mentions, you will get a different slant if you ask this on the Oberlin forum.

Any single college can't be all things to all people, no matter how much enthusiasm is involved. It is difficult to present info that may be helpful without knowing at least generally what you want.

on the other hand, if i go where my parents don't favor and I end up hating it, I would hate myself and my parents would point and laugh at me, lol... not really but...

anyways, I'm going to Oberlin. It was a tough choice and I hope I made the right one, I'm not sure o_O. I guess I can always transfer if I hate it hehe.

Awww..
well, I guess we'll have to play ERS without you...
sigh

I kid, I kid.
Have fun at Oberlin!

thanks, hopefully you'll find some other ERS players to have fun with hehe.

Also, does anyone know if CMU has a thing like they want me to tell them if i'm not going to CMU?

Yes, just call the admission office and tell them if you can't find the form. I think they have to have it in writing so fax a letter to the office. Something simple like:

Dear xxxx,
I will be unable to attend CMU for the Fall of 2006. blah blah blah.. Thank you for your understanding, Sign name here xxxxxx

You can go on-line where you would have enrolled

yea.

www.cmu.edu/ntia

click "enroll now" but say you won't enroll.
easy peasy, lemon sqeasy.
