When you are a native German the government will gift you a small amount of money when you attend college. As an American immigrant will I receive that same benefit or will the government expect me to get a job and do college at the same time?

Aehm, no, the German government doesn’t give automatic stipends to all German college students. There are two common kind of subsidies:

BAfoeG: Need-based financial aid for college, which comes half as a grant and half as a loan. Only German citizens and certain immigrants qualify. Immigrants are advised to contact their local Amt für Ausbildungsförderung, since the rules for immigrants are so complex that the government decided not to explain them online.

Kindergeld: This is a monthly allowance given to the caretaker/u of a minor child or young adult student. To qualify, your caretakers would have to be German citizens or immigrants. You apply for it at your local Familienkasse.

Thank you very much! I have searched the web for this info a lot but very little comes up and what does show up is complicated german. ( I’m not fluent yet) d
