Fafsa abroad question ?

Hello, I'm trying to go and study abroad ( Germany ) and I applied to Duisburg-Essen university which I got accepted.
I contacted Fafsa so see if I could take out a loan or any other kind of help, after about 45 min and getting transferred 3 times, I was told I had to contact the university and see if they accept it. Well, I did that and they've told me they don't really know about Fafsa and it's rules but have had many students receiving Fafsa when they came there. Any idea what I'm suppose to do ?

Thanks

“Students receiving FAFSA”? What are you talking about? The FAFSA is a financial aid application form. It does not award money.

Is there a FAFSA code number for your college ON the FAFSA website, so that your FAFSA can be submitted to them? If not, they don’t likely use the FAFSA to determine eligibility for need based aid.

What you need to do is contact the school and ask this : I am an American student who has been accepted to your college. How do I go about applying for need based aid to attend your school?

And you can contact the FAFSA help line again with a similar question. Ask if they have a code for your college.

You do realize the on,y guaranteed award you will receive is a Direct loan of $5500 for freshman year. If you are very low income, you could be eligible for the Pell grant or part of it.

How much does this college in Germany cost, and when you applied, how did you anticipate paying for it?

I have the code from FAFSA website itself, 03041600 Universität Duisburg-Essen, but it wouldn’t work, also the university itself, has a tuition cost of 300euros per semester it’s the housing/food that I need help with, I am eligible for Pell grant, I have around $5000 saved up and was hoping I could get the other 5000-6000 from loans

That’s exactly where I got it from Bob

And your school is listed as “deferment only”, meaning no federal loans to attend college there.

Which US school are you attending?

I do not think US Dept of Education would send any Pell grants to foreign schools. See https://studentaid.ed.gov/prepare-for-college/choosing-schools/types/international#study-abroad</a>

However,

So you are trying to enroll in a foreign uni directly rather than go through a study abroad program of a U.S. uni? If it doesn’t work out, and you go to a U.S. uni, you can apply for a Gilman Grant for study abroad. Last I knew of, they awarded about 1/3 of applicants:

<<<<

Ok…what will you use after you use up that 5000 your first year.

you wont get a Pell grant to get your education abroad.

Well, considering I will be given a work visa also, I plan to find a job there, my parents have also said they’ll help with w/e they can, but it all really depends on me finding a job there, just as if I was here in the US

You need to check whether and how much you can work in Germany. Many countries have restrictions on work for those in their country for studying.

If you are in Germany on a student visa, you may work up to 120 full days.
Will you be able to earn enough in that time to fund your expenses?
