I am in 7th grade (class of '17) And I want to know what I should start doing so that my chances increase on getting into ivy leagues (harvard, yale, columbia) I've visited them all. I am taking two highschool courses right now (spanish 1 and algebra1) I have a 91 in both. I took the sat and got a 1660. 570 m 560 r 530 w (i could have gotten a 1700 but I forgot to answer four questions >.>) anyways, my lowest grade is like an 86 in science but its because i NEVER study. I know i could do better if I studied but idk its just so boring!!!!. I play basketball and also play piano and I am very good with computers, I know 3d modeling and also know programming. I am hispanic. Thank you so much guys!!!

(p.s) Next year in my school there is a super advanced high school science class, and I might not get in. If i dont, does that ruin my chances of an ivy league?

Well for a 7th grader, just know that you’re getting above the national average on your SATs of US’s juniors and seniors! That’s impressive. However, for the ivy schools, you should aim for a score that is definitely over 2000. Also, don’t forget about the ACT! But you don’t really need to worry about that until you’re in high school and studying more of the math that you will need, etc. But never hurts to get a head start :P.

Also, start volunteering!! Although many college applications don’t ask about middle school volunteering, it never hurts to begin now. But make sure you get lots of volunteer as well as extracurricular activity hours. Keep up you’re good grades and good luck!

Btw, not having one AP or honors class won’t ruin your chances. However, you should always take as many challenging courses as you can to improve your chances.

Life is about the journey, not the destination.

If you live the next five years of your life to the fullest - study hard, find something that truly inspires you, do your best to make the world a better place - you will not only be in a good place for Ivy admissions, but you’ll have lived a life that you can be proud of, no matter where you end up going to school.

Ives are a great dream and its awesome you’re demonstrating interest and taking advanced courses. And its really cool that you’ve visited them.

Your motivation shouldn’t be… “get into school with name everybody knows”

Your motivation is to be you. And that’s anywhere it takes you. I’m sure some of the most experienced people on this forum can tell you that their lives have gone in many different unimaginable directions.

I took the ACT in 8th grade and i got a 20. I’m a current junior in HS and i’m practically top of my class but at my public HS, you are probably just as smart or in most cases even more so then the common student here.

Stats fill about every candidates application to ives (acceptation rates by time you apply… ~5%? )

BE YOU.

I got a 28 on my ACT and i know i’m not ivy material but the important thing to remember is that i found out what i wanted to do,without 10 hours of studying each night, and because i know that it really doesn’t matter to me where i go to go do it.

Being naturally intelligent really comes into play here… IMO, KEEP READING! you’re still at the age where you really might enjoy it. Please please please, keep reading and find what interests you. Regardless of what you choose to do, literacy will help you and ultimately make you an intelligent person one whom i can always respect regardless of anything else.

Think of it like a kid (ironic because you are one hahaha!) who wants to grow up to be an astronaut. Does it matter if he works for NASA… or the Russian one… or the Japanese one (do they have one?) as long as he gets to go up into space and to fulfill his dream.

hahaha thanks for your post (it really helps) Btw though, i WILL STUDY!!! (lol) Idc if its 10 hours a day, ill do it. did you get those awesome grades and scores without studying though?

btw div, i used a chart to convert, you got about a 1440 as an 8th grader (which is good) and i got a 25 on act in 7th grade. I am aiming for an 1800 next year one can only hope!!!

The other thing that you should do, is to encourage your parents to start talking about how your family will pay for your education. If your parents don’t know where to start, have them spend some time in the Financial Aid Forum and to read through the information at [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) Some things are bound to change between now and when you start college, but it is almost dead certain that everything is going to be even more expensive. Anything that you can do to save money for your own college education is a good thing.

The most important point here is that you’re a bit too young to be thinking about this. Concentrate on doing well in school and engaging in activities that you enjoy; that will get you into the best universities.

No one knows a recipe for getting into ivies. The ivies reject many, many very qualified kids because there are more qualifed kids with super stats than there are seats.

You’re missing the point… You shouldn’t let grades dictate your life (studying everyday all day) on the astronomical chance you’ll get into a school whose name you know the best.

Because of course all the “ivy leagues” are the same, you could pull a name out of a hat and attend that school and be just as happy as if you had gone to any other one. Good plan!

I Next year in my school there is a super advanced high school science class, and I might not get in. If i dont, does that ruin my chances of an ivy league?*

Well, there you go. If you don’t get in, you might as well give up. Cuz everyone knows that an 8th grade class is the tipping point for elite admissions. Oh, and if you didn’t get gold stars on your kindergarten fingerpaintings, you’re really done.

be really good at one-two things
get an UW 4.0
take at least 10 APs
get at least a 2300 SAT (2100-2200 for your because you’re hispanic)
start some kind of community initiative and show leadership
get great letters of recommendation
oh and also play at least 2 sports
