What is the best advice someone can give me about taking the ACT? I just get sooo worn out with taking the test. it seems like it goes on forever.

I hope someone can answer your question and help me too!!

My daughter is feeling same as you. If she could get one more point higher, it would double her merit scholarship. A tremendous financial help to me + for her, too – makes a study away possible. Something she’s really going to need for her major.

With her section scores over past tests, a higher score is not impossible and we’re not looking for a 30+ number but simply a 28. She’s a 3.9/4.19 GPA. If the school she is going to superscored, she’d already be there. But they don’t.

She just refuses. Is it hopeless?

Practicing helps immensely. It helps a student master the timing for each section and become familiar with the types of answers ACT is looking for. This is a very important skill to have, because many times more than one answer seems legitimate, but only one is the BEST answer. Experience makes the test so much less tedious, at least in my experience.

I also frequently repeat my favorite quote to myself when I am about to zone out during the test. It helps keep me focused.

And nina1228, what IS your favorite quote?

Personally, the best way to improve is just to take it over and over and over again. Practice full length practice tests, in one sit down, for three straight hours. There’s really no other way to practice your test taking stamina. I know I took 8 full-length, timed practice tests in the 2 months leading up to my ACT and my average score went up from a 31 to 35.
Also, make sure you are thoroughly going over every answer you get wrong. Eventually you will get so used to the kind of questions they ask and the decisions you must make that it becomes second nature!
