I need help making a decision...

I know there are a lot of threads out here, and that I am probably expecting bias from this forum, but I am just looking for an honest assessment between my two top choices. Right now, I am deciding between Columbia and Dartmouth, both great universities and yet two very different atmospheres.

I see a lot of threads on engineering and business, but I am wondering how these two schools fare in the social sciences (poli sci/gov't/econ).

I am a city kid, well at least as much city as CA can get, but I have also been thinking it might be nice to get a new environment.

I love Dartmouth because of blitzmail, the wired campus, the strong feeling of community, and strong alumni network.

I love Columbia because of the opportunities that may be afforded to me there, the better name recognition (more for my parents' sake), and the overall great city-life experiences that I can have at my fingertips, along with an interesting faculty.

I really am torn and visiting the two this week...but any help?

You’ll know after you visit. These schools are polar opposites, one will seem the natural choice.

Don’t pick a school for your parent’s. You are the one spending 4 years there. Unless you’re planning to leave the Country, these schools are equally respected by grad schools and employers.

Ditto hmom5. I would say maybe Dartmouth would be better for you since you’re a city kid – it’s good to experiment! But then again, you might die without shopping malls and concerts and clubs, so it’s kind of a tough call.

As I always say, “Trod the sod, then give one your nod.”
