I have 2 classes left to complete my degree. I took a 5yr break to take care of my pops(Liver Cancer) now I’m trying to go back to finish and I’m told the school no longer offers the major and that I have to start over in something else.
I have loans and I’m ineligible for anymore financial assistance. Worst part is that I just have to take 2 lower level courses I can take at a junior college. I’ve completed all upper level courses.
They say there’s nothing they can do, is this Right? I feel so cheated. There’s no way I can afford to start over. Someone please advise, I’d greatly appreciate some wisdom. Thanks
Have you spoken to the right people about the termination of the major? You might learn that there is something similar - often programs are merged to save money especially if it was a low enrollment major.
I’m under the impression that I have spoken to the right people. I’m trying to reach the President or Dean of the college but no luck so far.
The major was Construction Science and now it’s Construction Engineering. I was told that if I switched I’d still be years out from completion. This is not right man.
They won’t let you take the courses at another school and transfer the credit in?
This is the typical systrm: If all you’re missing is gen eds, completed all your major’s requirements, and you entered under a major heading, they’re supposed to let you able to finish under the catalog you entered as - that is, the major is discontinued for everyone but those already in the major, who finish it under the terms of the college catalog, which is your contract - in your case, getting the two gen eds/electives.
(It’s not like they’d have to offer nonexistent classes just for you. )
^That’s often the way it works but not always the way it works, and colleges can and do make changes to the catalog that they sometimes make continuing students abide by (there were a couple minor changes to the course catalog that ended up governing how I finished my degree when I was in college, for example). The other thing is that sometimes, even if a specific college does make the promise that the catalog you entered in is the one that governs your degree, that only applies IF you finish college in an uninterrupted string of residency. If you leave and have to be readmitted, often you are readmitted under the new college catalog.
Going to the president of the college is quite high, and they are almost certainly not the right person to talk to in this situation. So I’d give that line of reasoning up.
Who have you talked to so far? Department chair? an advisor? And how did they discontinue the major - did they combine it with something similar, or is there another similar major at the college? It’s possible that your existing credits are usable towards the new major - like let’s say the old major was human services and now the new one is like, human development and family studies. You may have a few more classes to take than two, but it may not be the same as starting the major all over again from jump.
If there’s no similar major, then I’d try going to an academic dean or academic advisor at your school.
