I’m about to start my senior year of high school and I need some help finding colleges to consider because I’m pretty lost.
Here are some stats:
unweighted gpa: 3.95
class rank: 2 out of about 200
SAT: 2010 (I might retake with preparation or try the ACT)
SAT II: US 780
APs: Stats 5, USH 5, Lang 5
Next year I will be taking 4 APs
I think that I would like to go to a small liberal arts school, preferably in New England. I visited Smith College and Mount Holyoke College and really liked them because of the strong sense of community. However those colleges seem to be about matches for me and I probably won’t get much merit aid.
I need help finding a small liberal arts college with a good sense of community and strong academics that I would be above the average at to maximize my chances of receiving merit aid.
St. Lawrence, Hobart & William Smith and Wheaton (MA) are schools to consider. NESCAC colleges offer excellent need-based aid, but merit scholarships there are harder to find – see if any of their websites look promising in this regard.
Merit aid tends to be a little more available in the south and midwest than the northeast.
What is your M+CR?
Take the SAT again as well as the ACT.
What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay?
Rhodes College, Spring Hill College, Birmingham Southern and some others give merit.
What is your major and career goal?
@mom2collegekids my combined math and critical reading is 1320. My parents would be willing to pay a lot, probably 75% of the full price at expensive private schools, but I don’t want to make them do that.
I am not 100% sure what I want to major in but recently I have been looking into social work.
