I need ideas.... Can't really find any other colleges I'm interested in

The only colleges I'm seriously considering are CU Boulder and U Iowa. I want to go pre-med, preferably with an anatomy major. I love snowboarding and I have a hard time imagining living someplace that isn't similar to the Rocky Mountains (even if I can't board). I'm also interested in getting plugged in with a church, but I really don't want to be in a conservative place.

Reasons I like Boulder (haven't heard back from them):
- Integrative Physiology major
- beautiful campus/environment/weather
- liberal, non-GMO food, zero-waste stadium... Boulder's attitude about those kinds of things are very attractive to me
- in-state tuition
- great town
- TONS of research opportunities
- really good food

Reasons I like UI (accepted):
-strong pre-med
-hospital and med school on campus
- relatives here, including a nurse at the hospital who has connections

Do you know of any places that are similar, or that I might like? I would LOVE to hear your thoughts. Thank you so much to those who reply to this <3

My basic profile:
- ACT: 28C, 29SS
- UW GPA: 3.5, W GPA: 4.1
- AP scores: 5 on lang and 5 on psych
- great leadership/teaching/volunteer experience

Are you instate for Iowa or Colorado?

Will your parents pay the high OOS costs at an OOS public?

How strong are you in bio, chem and math?

Hey! I’m in-state for Colorado. I’m honestly not expecting to get any financial-aid (family income), but I have gotten some merit scholarships. I would consider myself a math and science person, and I’ve taken a really strong course-load in the sciences with two biomed PLTW courses. I’d say that I like teaching myself and that I’m a really good test taker.

I wouldn’t leave Boulder for Iowa behind a team of oxen and drag chains. What could possibly attract you to college in Iowa when you’ve been to the Promised Land (p.s., there is no snowboarding)? There are other colleges in CO. CSU is strong in biology, as is Northern Colorado. What about Montana or Montana State? You’ve the Bridgers right there and all the outdoor opps you could desire.

what about UVermont? or one of the SUNYs?

I honestly don’t understand why you’re considering UI when it sounds like with a car or bike equipped with studded ties you can easily get to a hospital to shadow. Also CU has a plethora of bio research.

I currently live next to Montana State University with a STEM researcher who has many undergrads in her lab. It sounds like a much better fit for you than Iowa and would likely be considerably cheaper. Also Bozeman is a fantastic college town, particularly for someone who follows food trends and loves the outdoors. 16 miles from Bridger Bowl and an hour from Big Sky (the school has extremely low cost shuttles to those places).

The University of Utah could also be a viable option, although the college town section of SLC is lacking when compared to Boulder. Plus the heavy Mormon influence means the social scene is much more subdued than CU if that’s important to you at all.

I was thinking of the UT schools too. Great snow (less crowded slopes than CO) and affordable schools.

I agree with @whenhen, you would love MSU and it has an excellent STEM program. Better access to skiing than Boulder has with Bridger Bowl next door and Big Sky less than an hour away. If you can get into the honors program all the better. Check it out for sure!

I was going to add the U’s of Idaho, Wyoming, and NM to the list. I’m sure you could get into all of them. I think your chances at UCO-Boulder are pretty good, however.

@jkeil911‌ there is nothing attractive about the state of Iowa what so ever, just the opportunities and premed courses at U Iowa.

And thank you so much to hose who replied. Anything Utah is a no go, I would go insane there. I hadn’t ever concidered MSU, but I’m definitely going to check it out now and let everyone know what I think! This has been incredibly helpful, I feel like I’ve got a place to start now :)

If possible, apply to MSU today so as to ensure consideration for all nonresident scholarships. You may also be eligible for the honors program. Be sure to apply for that as well (that doesn’t have to be done ASAP).

If you have any questions about Bozeman, feel free to PM me.

Thank you so much @whenhen‌. I take it you’ve lived there? I’m currently looking at MSU as we speak.

I currently live in Bozeman. According to Google Maps I live less than .5 miles from the university.

@whenhen How long does it take to get to the nearest ski place?

20 minuteish drive to Bridger Bowl, the nearest major skiing destination. The school also has shuttles to both Bridger Bowl and Big Sky, a good number of skiing and snowboarding clubs (even has a snow science major/ minor if you’re interested), and extremely cheap gear rentals. Plus, both Big Sky and Bridger give great student discounts.

Somewhat off topic, but according to one of your previous posts, you currently live in or near Colorado Springs. There are direct flights from your local airport to Bozeman if that’s a concern for you at all.

more important than distance to msu and skiing is the 78 miles to YNP and the best trout fishing and wildlife watching in the lower 48!

Even more enjoyable than the wildlife watching is the tourists interacting with wildlife watching.

yeah, makes you wonder sometimes which species has the finer intelligence.
