I have been accepted to West Point but dont know whether I want to go or not. I really want to get into aviation with planes but I know that the army doesnt have any fixed wing aircraft. I have been offered an AFROTC scholarship at the Univ of Tennessee. I know that I can most likely get into aviation in AFROTC but its soooo hard for me to turn down the amazing education at USMA. Does anyone know any aviation jobs other than helos at USMA? I am confused about what to do, any advice would be much appreciated.

I am kinda in the same situation, accepted to USMA with NROTC scholarship. I took USMA and am heading out June 30. i guess the difference is i would love to fly helos, and am not stuck on fix wing. I dont know too much about the specifics though, other than i want to branch into aviation at West Point

The army does in fact have fixed wing aircraft...you just wont be flying any fighters. Right now there is a movement within the Army to take back a lot of the aviation that went to the air force that deals with the army. there are rumors of the aviation branch growing rapidly in the near future...

Hi Benjamin,

I sent you a private email from a new cadet candidate mom's perspective. Let me know if it didn't come through!

I was in the same position as a candidate, and I'm still not sure how I'll like rotorcraft if I manage to branch Aviation in a few years. Remember the army does have fixed wing aircraft, but you'll be flying in transportation, not comabat. I'd recommend talking to your laison officer, maybe ask to be put in contact with an Army pilot (preferably WP grad) who can give you greater insight.

ElyseD's post just reminded me of something else - there is an AFJROTC instructor (Colonel) from Sullivan South in Kingsport who is an Air Force Academy graduate - he sat in on the panel for 1st District Congressman David Davis' nominations - who has a cadet in the Sullivan South unit who has also just been appointed to USMA through a ROTC appointment. I know this instructor well enough to feel that he would be able to give you honest and unbiased answers to the pros and cons of aviation through the army vs. air force, and since he is a graduate of AFA as well as familiar with UT-Knoxville's AFROTC program, he may be able to advise you and answer your questions and concerns better than anyone else I know in this area of TN.

If you want more info, please email me privately and I will get you his name and phone number.

I realized this morning that my email has changed since I joined College Confidential. I just changed it in my profile...sorry if you had tried to contact me otherwise and couldn't!
