Piloting?

Is there any pilot program at USMA? thanx I've done reasearch and some are saying yes and some no so can anyone confirm one of them!

There is Army Aviation (helicopters) but not fixed wing that I know of. Aviation

Aren't most Army pilots Warrant Officers?

Okay, just to make sure I understand! Your saying that there is a piloting program at USMA that lets you pilot helicopters. If so do you have to become a pilot after USMA? thanx I"ve been looking everywhere to confirm it and haven't been able to find out anything!

Many Army pilots are Warrant Officers - esp now with the war there is a shortage. Last winter when I was in Fla - driving through Daytona I actually heard a commercial on the radio from the Army looking to recruit those with college degree to be Warrant Officers and chopper pilots. Warrant Officers who fly will typically fly their whole career - I think a lot of them are reserves as well.
Many Army Pilots are also Commissioned Officers. Aviation is one of the three most popular branches chosen by newly commissioned officers.

There is no pilot program AT the academy. Flight school comes after commissioning. Some cadets do some helicopter training in the summer for a few weeks. It is nothing that you can count on however.

Thanx very much!

JAM -

Do you happen to know how that career path goes? When does the selection occur for pilot slots? Before or after commissioning?

You'll get your branch assignment in your senior year. If you get aviation as a branch and upon graduation, you'll go to Ft Rucker Al for your officer basic course and flight school.

Is it possible to do offier basic course and fight school before you graduate?

You get 4 years of officer basic...it's a 47 month program called USMA. You graduate a 2nd Lt. Some cadets do some flight activities over the summer, but everyone goes for the "official" training after graduating. You don't know your branch until your final year, so you cannot be trained for it specifically until after graduation.

Thanx! so you only have to train for your branch and not the oficer candiate caourse! thats alot easier!

there's a flying club here and we fly fixed wing, the army needs some fixed wing pilots for transpo.

At the flying club can you earn a piloting lisence?

As mom3boys mentioned, yes with 47 months at USMA you get your butter bars, but after you graduate from USMA, you still have to attend an officer basic course, no matter what your branch assignment. It's here after college, that you learn the basics expected of an officer in your assigned branch. If you get infantry, you go to the infantry officer basic, artillery you go to the artillery officer basic course, and aviation the aviation officer basic course. It's at these schools that you learn to apply branch specific skills. You can still learn to fly at USMA, but its for a private license. One thing about the army, you'll always be a student...
Just an old retired aviator...

Thanx I was actually looking if I could get my pricate pilot license at USMA!
