Ok, my daughter has Juniata on the top of her list, with Susquehanna, Elizabethtown and Muhlenberg under it. My concern is that there are reviews stating that Juniata is a redneck school with nothing but locals attending. I am not from the area so I can not determine if these opinions are true or false. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. We have visited the school for a tour and will be attending a personal interview shortly. I will ultimately let there decision up to her but would like to know more so I can help in her decision. Thank you so much in advance for your input.

For whatever this is worth, a co-worker’s daughter graduated from there with an environmental science major, absolutely loved it. She’s from a Puerto Rican family and grew up in the Bronx.

That would be her major also, Environmental Science. Your tips helps greatly…

Niece’s D will graduate this May.Not from that are but is from Pa. Has gotten into all Vet. Schools she wanted including UPenn and Cornell. She went there on full scholarship so only has to worry about debt from Vet. school.UPenn is giving nice scholarship. Her brother also went there and got a job at Vanguard right out of school 2 years ago.

I knew several Juniata grads and I would not categorize them as such at all. They liked their college enough to consider it for their kids and continue a relationship there. I’ve not been to the school so cannot comment on the current atmosphere there. If it is a big issue in terms of the decision, I recommend your student spend a couple of days there this month to get a feel for the place.

Given its location, it will be a “vanilla” type school. A lot of such schools fall in that category, and are great places to get an education despite the lack of a lot of diversity. If diversity is an issue for a family or student, however, such schools are not a good choice because they simply do not have it.

More of a concern to us was if whether a school is a “suitcase” or commuter school to such a degree that it adversely affects the campus life. That is something you might want to investigate.

A tour and an interview are slim information for a final decision. Is there any way she can go and spend the night, attend a class, eat in the cafeteria, etc.?

My D has Juniata on her list and we know 3 grads from our generation: a chief of anesthisology, and an optometrist who married a speech therapist. They’ve all been wildly successful, happy, and proud of their Juniate UG. The speech therapist and anethsiologist came from PA; the optometrist from NJ.

None of them called it “redneck,” but they all do admit there’s not much off campus.

OP–I assume you know Juniata is a CTCL school? That’s a plus in my book.

Great conversation, thanks. I am following along intently. She is scheduled for a day trip where she will attend class and talk to a Professor. It’s good to hear of the successes.

The Chronicle of Higher Ed had a nice article on Juniata a while ago. I spend a weekend there every summer and it is in the middle of nowhere, but a very nice little college.

PM Holliesue: I think her daughter is deciding on this as well…

OK thanks for the help.

I don’t know anything about the school, but you can see from this College Board page that it’s 59% in-state students and 41% OOS. That seems reasonably high OOS to me. There are a whole lot more statistics to be had from this site as well.

jknmcd, I just sent a PM (private message) to you.

Got it, Thanks

Juniata is a phenomenal choice for environmental science! Huntingdon isn’t a thrilling town but between the college and town there appears to be enough to do! Also tons of outdoor rec opportunities ! The area just past the college has beautiful homes! My daughter will be a freshman. Feel free to stay in touch with me and I will let you know how things go!
