I need your honest opinion!

Hi guys! I'm really concerned with the college admission process. I had a few school in mind and I wanted your honest opinion on getting in.

I also recently became home schooled. I attended a public high school for my first 3 years, now senior year I am home schooled. I have 3.8 GPA (unweighted). My SATs were horrible, because i'm a bad standarized test taker, but I have a 30 combined score for my ACT. I plan on taking 3 SAT subject tests. I also scored a 4 on my AP Language and Comp test.

I was thinking of Wake Forest, USC, UCLA, NYU, Cornell, Brown, Vanderbilt, Duke, and Stanford. I am applying early to Wake Forest even though USC is my #1 school because USC doesn't have an early application choice.

Be honest guys, what do you think are my chances of getting in. And which schools do you think would accept me.

Well, what I can say, for Cornell, Brown, Duke and Stenford we definitifly need some ECs, without it’s getting impossible. Although it’s already quite hard with your ACT. I can’t help you with your other choices, but I think it’s similar.

If you want my honest opinion, I think it’s unlikely you’ll get into the schools on your list with your current scores and lack of any mention of E.C’s…

Forgot to mention extra curricular activities. I’m a varsity swimmer and rower. I also do a lot of community service. I am part of National Honor Society, National French Honor Society. I am captain of my competitive dance team, and have been for the past 6 years. I volunteer at a camp for kids with disabilities, i also volunteer at the mental ward of a hospital. I have a job in town as well.

why is it that you say it is unlikely? thank you for the honesty. what parts make it unlikely?

Unweighted GPA is 3.88
Weighted GPA is 4.69/5

Retake the ACT for 32+, and you’ll be in much better shape. Info about extra curriculars would be very helpful. GPA looks pretty good. Take some SAT IIs since you’re homeschooled in order to help validate your schooling.

Wake Forest - Not too familiar, but low reach
USC - low reach
UCLA - low reach, maybe high match if out of state
NYU - high match
Cornell - high reach
Brown - high reach
Vanderbilt - high reach
Duke - high reach
Stanford - very high reach

If you have time, please chance me back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1550676-chance-my-final-list-i-will-chance-you-back.html

I think the main concern was with your test scores: a 30 on the ACT is definitely below average for all of the schools you mentioned and could indicate some grade inflation at your school. This could be further proven/disproven with your SAT Subject Tests, although make sure to relate those to your major.

Have you visited any schools? To me, your list reads more like a top schools in the US list, rather than a personal decision. If I was you, I’d try to make sure that I would be personally satisfied and happy at the schools I apply to, not just academically. Perhaps you could do virtual tours, watch videos, talk to students, etcetera, to find out more information about each school, if you haven’t already?

Otherwise, I’d say you have a shot at the schools you mention, but that is not to say that is certain that you would accepted in any of them. It is just that, a shot.

Have you considered retaking the ACT or trying the SAT General Test, if that could be easier for you?

Overall, your stats are too low for many of the schools on your list. For even slight chances at some of these, you need at least a 32 on the ACT. Your GPA is fairly good.

UCLA- Low Reach (OOS)
NYU- High Match
Cornell- Reach
Brown- High Reach
Vanderbilt- Reach/ High Reach
Duke- Reach/ High Reach
Stanford- High Reach

thanks so much! yeah I am retaking my ACT and I am taking SAT II tests. I have visited most of these schools, not all though because of location. I live in NJ so I have visited Cornell, Brown, NYU, Duke, and Wake Forest. USC, UCLA, and Stanford are schools that all have my desired major and location, but I never got to visit.

I feel that I came across as a bit harsh, but getting your ACT up will help a lot. Best of luck to you with that. A 30 is a solid foundation, and I’m sure that you can get it up 2, if not 3 or 4 points.
