I never thought I would say this...I wish I could write more essays.

i'm in a deep quagmire over my essay topics.

two of the most influential factor in my life is reserach and my family. i don't have the impressive awards to show the achievement and dedication i've poured into science, so i was going to write about it but i see that it may get repetitive (in short and long common app essay)...

then there is my family situation. i am an immigrant (nothing new really now :P) and like every immgrant, it was never easy. last year, my parent went back to country and i had to juggle through 6 ap's, standardized testing, etc etc...but i survived and in the process i really grew.

both are important and both will probably get a mention in reconmmendations.

i am worried that lack of awards in resume will do no justice to effort i put into research (all 4 years!--i am a newbie at science fair). but then family situation is rather private and writing about it will make it seem so dramatic, fake, etc etc.

i hope i can somehow combine these two to give it equal importance, but i haven't been able to come with a good idea...

what do you think?

i think your research would be a great topic, especially since you didn't receive any awards in it, and would be a good topic to expand on to show what your life is like. Just try to make it not so scientific, and more creative. Essays on family are a bit more cliche.

I know you've heard it said before, but don't write about what you think colleges want to hear. Your intentions WILL shine through. Write about whatever you're most passionate about.

Well, maybe you can incorporate some aspects of your family life into an essay about science research. As cliched as it may sound, you could explain how advancing and becoming more confident in science is leading you to your American Dream, or something to that affect.

Ahh..I don't know.

Good luck.

thanks all. I think I'll focus on research. :) family in a part of me, but research constitute the whole!
