So I'm rather far behind on my college essay writing.. as in i still am stuck in regards to what to write about. I know colleges want you to write about something demonstrating how you would "enrich the campus" and such, and the general CC essay is "i escaped [foreign country x]/poverty/whatever and rose above it to get a 4.0 and 2400", but yeah i didn't do any of that. my family isn't rich but we don't struggle at all, i was born and raised in a quiet suburb, and haven't overcame any potentially life-changing struggles.. does this place me at a rather large disadvantage?

the topics i've came up with so far really don't seem to compare to what the "normal" CC essay brings:
-having a job since Aug '08 and how its helped me mature from a quiet, shy kid into an outgoing, confident person

-how i matured after going through relationship troubles with my ex-gf that most people don't go through at all, and how i've become more focused on my academics and personal enrichment because i don't have that stress anymore

-(my dad suggested this one and i made it into an actual topic) how i want to major in physics because i have a desire to help our generation overcome mistakes of past generations

So yeah not particularly as exciting as most of the CC essays, but thats all i really can think of. Are any of those good topics whatsoever/any suggestions to make them into good topics?

just start writing
Take any of the topics you have, and flush them out.
Maybe all of them.

After you do that, you’ll see which one feels write.
None of them will be right if you don’t start.

Try this exercise - prepare a list of what you’d like your teacher-recommender to say about you. Include things you’re working on to improve as a student, individual, member of society.

As you look at the list, and your potential essay topics, you’ll see a trend, a theme, develop. Of what you are trying to present yourself as to the school. What you will bring to the school. A slice of yourself. (My DD asked a teacher for a recommendation and he, in turn, made her do this exercise - so that his letter would enhance the image that she’s presenting to the schools)

The schools are not expecting all essays to be “i escaped from x and overcame it” - nor do they want that. Stop thinking of what you aren’t and think of what you are.

Google and read sample good essays and bad essays - they’re all over the web.

(my least favorite is the post-girlfriend stress)

What is the coolest thing you ever did in your life? What has been your biggest adventure? And if you haven’t had any adventures yet? What kind of adventure do you expect to find in college?

Or, go with your dad’s idea. Dads are frequently right.
