I think that unless you are one of those people who absolutely NEED to be in a city, you can definitely still have fun here. It may be a bit of an adjustment at first, but once you get used to it, the small town life is kinda nice. I grew up very close to a big city, so coming here was a shock. I’ve learned to like it though. People are friendly, there’s nature all around, and it feels so uncommercialized - sort of like a secret little place not many people know about.

I’ve also found that Cal Poly students are generally very accepting, and while it may not be the most racially diverse school, there is still a lot of diversity in terms of interests, socio-economic status, etc. And most everyone is pretty down to earth, which is nice, especially since I grew up in area with a lot of “privillaged” kids who felt entitled and loved showing off their money.

In many ways the big city comes to SLO. There are concerts and all kinds of events. On one of my trips to SLO, I ran into Snoop Dog giving a concert at a local downtown pub. Can’t get any more urban than that. Yes it is a small town, but not any smaller than South Lake Tahoe. Having said that how small can SLO be with a Costco and Trader Joe’s? We are from LA and generally have more fun in SLO! Santa Barbara is 1 1/2 hours away if you need a big city for a day…
