Hello, I really need someone to talk to for college advice. My School has one terrible college counselor who just restates information from a booklet.Anyway, my question is this...

I didn't do so well on my last Act(28) and I really want to apply to U Houston before December ( for the priority deadline). Should I apply now and retake another Act and send it in later? I really need scholarships. Major wise, I am undecided, ( really, I wouldn't mind majoring in chemistry or even English) , so what "school" in UH has higher chances of scholarships for freshman. I know that some schools become unpopular and hand out scholarships to gain back students.

Thank You so much for reading this! Hopefully you will answer!

Your act is not that bad considering uh’s average act. Yes I would submit and then retake. Major in something you enjoy because it will be what you are ‘doing’ for years. Also look for independent scholarships. Banks in local communities often have some. Even if it is $500 or so that $500 you don’t have to repay. Is there a competitive school near that you are aware of–a nearby high school. Get on their counselors site and see what they list for advice/scholarships.

Have you checked the Net Price Calculator on the University of Houston’s website? Every college has an NPC somewhere within the financial aid section of their website. The NPC will help you get an estimate of your need-based financial aid at each college.

So I would submit application now, get your transcripts sent and the act score and plan to retake the act. Are you hoping for a particular scholarship? If so what do you need on the act. Was this your first try at the act? I’m afraid your counselor may not get things done in time if you wait too long, or would this not likely be a problem.

I was looking ta the Academic Excellence scholarship for Uh.
Typically, entering freshmen will be eligible to compete for the Academic Excellence Scholarship if they:

Rank in the top 20% of their high school graduating class
Score 1200 or above on the SAT or 25 or above on the ACT
SAT scores are calculated using only the critical reading and math portions
Have a complete admission file with the University of Houston
No application for this scholarship is necessary. All students are automatically reviewed for eligibility upon admission to the university. This award ranges from $2,500 to $8,500 per year and is renewable for up to four years

The latest they will accept a act score is January 31st so keep that in mind. Also they say the transcript must have class rank on it so verify it will. Have you requested your transcript. All automatic scholarships go first to those who applied EVERYTHING by dec. 1st.

The dec act would probably be your last one considered by uh as long as they receive the score by jan. 31st. You will be considered now based on your scores so you are just wanting to improve your chances I assume. Get your transcripts sent Monday so you will have time for uh to verify they received them. If you didn’t yet report your act then do that Monday also. Also send in your application ASAP again so you have time to verify everything. Without this stuff in and in good order you may miss the deadline. Make the deadline then reevaluate if you want to retake the act.

If you have strong ec’s and community service be sure to list it on the application. You are in good shape now just don’t miss getting things in. They won’t accept any excuse. No exceptions.

I’m not real familiar with all the texas schools however there is a thread about what schools give good fin aid and scholarships you might check that out. Out of state university of arkansas fayetteville and the university of alabama recruit outside of state heavily. In fact most of the kids on a college tour with my daughter in arkansas were from texas. They will waive out of state tuition if you have the scores that qualify up to 90% but then you have to consider the distance. There is also a thread just on texas schools I think it is under college searches, at the top you have the choice of texas schools. You will probably find helpful info there. Good luck!!!
