The ease of becoming a nurse and the astounding salaries have drawn me to nursing and I wanna do just that. The problem is that my parents want me to go to college and probably apply to med school since everybody thinks I'm a genius. Problem is that I would have gone to community college for free but my parents ruined that too by messing up my class rank after moving. Now I'm stuck having to go to college with 40 credits fulfilling gen eds and other stuff. And since my parents will be paying for it, I'm pretty sure nursing school won't be an option. What should I do? I'm a guy btw.

There's nothing wrong with nursing. It's an incredibly respectable field. As a male, you'll be definitely given a leg up due to the lack of competition/demand for males. You can still go to college. Certain universities have nursing programs that you could transfer/apply to. There's always the option that you could take the exam. And then go to nursing school/med school or whatever later on.

Nursing is in HIGH demand. Just be sure you like it...

Become a nurse anesthetist. They make tons of money.

Male nurses are awesome and often rise to the top.

"The ease of becoming a nurse and the astounding salaries have drawn me to nursing and I wanna do just that."

I have the feeling that you can find easier things to become that are as well paying. In fact, I hope you find such things. As a potential patient of yours, I'm frightened by your reasons for considering nursing.

^OMG I didn't even see that part! Nursing isn't that easy to get into. You really need to find something you are actually interested in becoming EVEN IF that job didn't pay what it does. I want to be a pharmacist--I don't care if I make $300,000 (which they don't) or $30,000--I really want to do it.

You're probably frightened by most doctors in this country then.

Is there anything else that drew you to nursing, such as their role to help people? You have to be sure that it's actually the thing you want to do in life. I don't think any patient will want to be examined by a nurse who doesn't care about them.

"You're probably frightened by most doctors in this country then."

Yes, I am. Too many people now go into medicine for the money.

Not anymore, as the money in medicine is quickly drying up.

Nursing school is not easy. I watched my mom do it for two years rather recently, and in that time, her community college probably weeded out half of the people who began the program. If the OP only wants something easy and high-paying, I guarantee he'll switch majors after his first clinical practice class. (I'd suggest majors I think he's likely to switch into, but I'm not in the mood to get flamed.)

That being said, if you really care about nursing, there are plenty of ways to convince your parents it's a good career. It's in high demand currently, you're doing wonderful work by helping people out and taking on quite a bit of responsibility for others' lives, and the money is good- you won't make as much as a doctor, but you won't be paying off sky-high med school debts, either. If you care about it for reasons other than money and ease, go for it.

I'll say it again - if you're only drawn to nursing for the "ease of becoming a nurse" and the money, then you don't "really want to be a nurse."

Nursing school isn't easy.
You don't have to go to a CC. And pre-med and nursing have a lot of the same course requirements, so you can still please your parents for another year or two.

Look guys, I'm drawn to the medical field because of job satisfaction. My mom is a nurse and dad is a doctor so I have patient's thanking them all the time. I've seen people progress through treatment and how much of an impact nurses and doctors can have on it. As for the Nursing school part well I know for sure i can get through that but Med School, I'm unsure since I may not even get in and its hella lot harder than Nursing school.

It shouldn't be about which one is easier.

I'm confused, tamarind...if your mom's a nurse, why wouldn't she support you going into the field? I would talk it over with her if I were you, see if she has concerns about you doing it because of reasons that aren't prestige-related.

dude she WANTS me to be a doctor while my dad tries to say he just wants me to be successful. She probably wants me to be a doctor since almost everyone from her country goes into nursing and she wants me to be more successful and realise my true potential :(

the chicks in nursing are so hot.

you still need a bachelors degree to become a doctor, so why not become a nurse but also take the pre-med classes and then after you are a nurse you can become a doctor.

The thing is, is that he doesn't want to be a doctor, and he shouldn't have to be.

According to my mom, nursing is a very exhausting job. You're always on your feet, you're in close contact with people (dangerous, insane, or just plain ), and there's the forever looming threat of making a fatal medical mistake.

This is not good advice at all, for a number of reasons I won't go into right now.

If you want to be a nurse, take out loans or work so you can pay for nursing school.
